Ugh. Terrible story.

Horrible characters and terrible story. Unrealistic in the extreme. Like something written by a high school student who’s trying to be hip. Save your money!

Narrator Elizabeth Knowelden lisps and whispers

John Marrs is an excellent writer. His stories are beautifully developed and creepy and interesting and twisty and so very original!! I will buy a book just seeing his name on it. But this narrator!! She is so offensive to my ear, I had to stop listening. I kept thinking this would get better but no, it never did, I skipped ahead hoping the whisper/lisp was for a reason but no, that's just the way she reads. Listening to a sample does not help as you think this way of speaking is for maybe a person hiding and whispering. This came free with an Unlimited book so I didn't pay but I am still so disappointed as I just love Marrs's books and was looking forward to a great listen.

Exhausting

I read a few of Marrs's book and liked them all very much. This one is a disaster. Very different writing style, very much resembles a TV crime show, generic and hard to follow. I just couldn't get into the story and both characters and plot were boring. I was hoping that by mid book it would finally get interesting but it was terrible all the way to the end. I'm really disappointed with this one and I hope his other books are not like this one.

Great story line but

Got really tired of the pissing and moaning of the characters. After thr fifth time time pissing and moaning of how bad she or he felt got really stale. But great plot just ease up on the whining

I have many issues with this

I've read all of his books. This is the one to skip. Her narration is breathy and odd. The plot is strange and makes little sense. I wanted to give up after the department of super sighters or whatever it was. I know authors are required for some reason to make characters a little flawed but I mean. This is every character having trauma in their past. It drives me crazy now, there were drunk drivers, rent boys, parental abuse, missing sisters, dead sisters, dead families. That's just for 3 characters. Read any of his other books especially if it's a first listen

A serial killer story

Set in London, this is the story of a unique serial killer with an agenda to not only get revenge on everyone responsible for the current state of his life, but recognition for his love for his family.

Wow!!!! I loved it!!! Totally Engaging!!!

I started listening to this book and was finished in a day and a half. The narrator's voice was well suited for the story and the story itself was great!!! It has all the components of a great mystery and suspense. I got some nice twists and turns which made me want to listen until the end just to find out what happens.

What a serial killer is all about . . . The bad and the worst

You know the who, the how and the why!! A true twisted soul who puts the blame on everyone else, indeed, the six people he killed! The story was great even if I didn’t like what happened! I felt the protagonist’s pain and I cried, first time in a long time reading (listening) to a book! The performance was good, but could have used more varied voices! Overall a great book, but sure can’t see a sequel out of this one!

Irritating narrator

Have really enjoyed all of this authors previous books and the story of this seemed pretty good as well but sorry had to return as just found the narrative too distracting! She has a really self satisfied voice that just irritated me! Made the characters really hard to follow and unbelievable!

Good story. Awful narration. :(

I enjoyed the story enough to plough through the breathy affected narration. It was close though! Almost gave up a few times. But I've enjoyed all john marrs I've read, and did not want to miss this book. This narration was awful. Every sentence delivered in a breathy dramatic way, whispering the last few words of each sentence. Noooo. I'm glad the book is finished to be honest. Shame shame shame.

Could Not Finish As Just A Bit Dark For Me ...

I loved two of John Marrs' most recent books (The One, When You Disappeared) and was excited to try this and did like the sound of it. Opened well, liked the characters, loved the idea of Super Recognisers, liked plucky Becky - but then it got a bit dark for me - plus the mention of animal cruelty albeit as in a backstory. to be honest it was not even the murders that made me want to stop listening - it was just too cheerless and brooding and perhaps as told from the killers POV at times, there were not the clues to follow as in other murder mystery thrillers so I felt more like a passenger than a detective. I did think it was very well written and I will definitely try another John Marr's book but just, I suppose, but just a bit bleak for me as the killer was just so depressing and sick and the killings so cruel and undeserved - I found myself just not wanting to hear any more or really caring what happened next as I had had enough. So a personal preference rather than a reflection on the excellent storytelling and interesting plot. Loved the narration, I have enjoyed a few books read by Elizabeth Knowelden but never heard her be so compelling before and at times she sounded like a sexy alien or android which I thought added greatly to the brooding atmosphere and mystery.

Started really well and kept going.

Have to admit that I do appreciate elaborate murders and this book is full of them. Detectives with difficult home lives and equally difficult pasts are well defined and I found, completely believable. The protagonist plays a significant part in the whole proceedings and I so enjoy seeing both sides of the coin. Although I accurately guessed the ultimate victim, another totally unexpected twist and I was blind sided. It is a long book but well read and utterly absorbing. Enjoy

Great book

Another compelling book by John Marrs. This man is a master storyteller and every book I’ve read of his has been just as compelling and emotive as the last.

OK story

A run of the mill detective story, the characters are likeable, but come across immature at times. The though process of the main characters give conclusions to move to the narrative along. Quite well written and well narrated.

Another great Marrs book

I particularly liked the reference to the cuckoo, Laura. Marrs really knows how to spin a tale.
