Publisher's Summary

In a realm where toxic mist sweeps the lands and magic is forbidden, all Bleak wants is a cure for her power.

Still grieving the death of her guardian and dangerously self-medicating with alcohol, Bleak is snatched from her home by the Commander of the King's Army and summoned to the capital. But the king isn't the only one interested in Bleak's powers.

The leader of an infamous society of warriors, the Valia Kindred, lays claim to her as well, and Bleak finds herself in the middle of a much bigger battle than she anticipated.

Heart of Mist is the gripping first book in The Oremere Chronicles, a fantasy series of epic proportions.

Minus 10 stars for this book.

13 hours in this book and they didn't even reach a conclusion. They just stopped after many many chapters. At first I didn't even understand the story line til it was around chapter 8 or 9. The writer introducing to many characters in the first 5/6 chapters. still not sure if Bleak is the main character or not. I guess your supposed to buy the next book of chapters to know how the book actually ends. It wasn't left on a cliffhanger. It was like someone said "Ok it's bed time. not more book time for you" I detest books like that. The book was boring enough not to actually care what happens to the characters. Worst book I have listen to in a very long time. Can say without a doubt I won't be getting any more of this writers book.

Took a long time to catch interest

I had to keep restarting the book to gain interest. Also this book is full of swearing and lgbtq for those that want to know.

my ears suffer

1. the sound is awful. Was it recorded in a tin box?
2. the narrator makes an angry voice for the king who (according to the story) is so good at hiding it's emotion you never know when he's angry.
3. the narrator speaks very loudly to do the characters voices.....
had to stop listening. Sad. I think the story could have been good.

Narrator was not good AT ALL

okay so the narration was dreadful, I couldn’t get past it. I am not the type of person to hate a narrator, most of the time I can just get use to the voice, but this one was so awful. I would suggest reading this not listening, I have no clue what the story is about because the narrator was so bad. Her internal voice was fine but when the character talked I literally cringed every time. Please just read the book don’t waste your money.

loved it!

Such a well written story. Completely unpredictable. Powerful characters that had their flaws which created realistic weaknesses. Human nature was captured well. BEST PERFORMANCE! Love this voice actor. She does an outstanding job!

Can’t wait to find out what happens next(:

This is the first book by Helen that I have read, and I found it really enjoyable. The story is unique and moves along at a good pace. The main character has a lot of growth (though I wish it would move along faster when it came to Bren! Oh well, guess the author does need some fodder for the next books.) There are actually quite a few interesting characters, all multidimensional and well fleshed out. This book definitely keeps you guessing. I disagree with some of the criticisms of the narrator, I think she did a great job. Male voices are difficult and she was able to make them both masculine and variable, so each one sounded different. She did a good job of expressing emotion without becoming overdramatic, as some narrators tend to do. Had no problem listening to her voice.

Enthralling

Once again, Angels Masters keeps the listener spellbound and in this story, great characters combined with a fantastic story keep you listening and wanting more. A two thumbs up and definitely recommended for fantasy enthusiasts.

Fantastic story, Fantastic Performance!

The story is absolutely fun to read and I never got bored, which is rare for me. Each character revealed more and more secrets as the story evolves and I was often thrilled by the twists and turns. The reader did a FANTASTIC job portraying the character and realm. She was able to effectively play both male and female characters and was even able to give accents to characters from the different areas of the mystical world. I am very excited to hear more from both the author and the preformer!

Great ending

The storyline was a bit slow. It picked up at the end though because it leaves on a cliffhanger.

Great magical Audiobook

Was surprised at how interesting and inviting the story was and has quite a few twists and turns I was definitely not expecting. Would recommend this book for anyone looking for a new magical fantasy adventure book or Audiobook.

Some great ideas but felt much too rushed

I kept zoning out trying to listen to this. There was some great expectation subversion and characters but the story feels much too rushed to me. I found that the pace robbed the writing of much of it's emotional weight so by about half way through I'd stopped caring and engaging with the characters. Such a shame because there are some genuinely wonderful choices in this book.

Part of a series

If you’re looking for a one book done this isn’t it. Nothing is really solved, it’s more of an introduction to each character and explaining their mannerisms and story. Good read though

Not For Me

I really tried to like this book, but after eight hours of listening, I just couldn't listen any more. Usually I can get a feel for a book in a few hours, but this one didn't seem to be going anywhere. The characters were lack lustre and the main female character was just unpleasant. Angele Masters was the only highlight in this dreary experience, but even her performance couldn't lift this book out of the doldrums. Just not for me.

Mediocre

The story was ok but it all felt pretty flat. Bleak is an orphaned alcoholic with a tragic past but honestly she could have died anytime and I wouldn't have cared. Same for all the characters. Nothing in this book made me want to laugh or cry or rush on to the next chapter full of anticipation. The dialogue also didn't feel natural.
