Publisher's Summary
Dr. John E. Sarno, author of the revolutionary book Mind Over Back Pain, is a medical pioneer whose program has helped patients overcome their back conditions- without drugs or dangerous surgery. Now, using his latest research into TMS, Dr. Sarno goes one step further. After identifying stress and other psychological factors in back pain, he demonstrates how many of his patients have then gone on to heal themselves without exercise or other physical therapy.
Discover why self-motivated and successful people are prone to TMS, how anxiety and repressed anger trigger muscle spasms, how people "train themselves" to experience back pain, and how you may get relief from back pain within two to six weeks by recognizing TMS and its causes.

This book saved my life!
In 2014, I started getting sciatica pain that progressed to the point that I could not walk more than a few steps, I could not stand for any amount of time and would pass out from the pain. Showers were a half-hour task that could only accomplished on all fours. Worst of all, I could not work. Defiantly, one morning, I tried to will myself to work once and ended up in my car, in my carport, writhing and crying in pain. I I tried epidurals with no relief. I was on Vicodin, then Oxicontin, and Fentinol. Four specialists told me that surgery (to fuse discs) was my only hope. A fifth specialist told me explained to me: I could make more money cutting you open, but you would not be happy with the results. He suggested that we exhaust every non-surgical option and only after that, would he suggest surgery. And he stressed "STOP TAKING PAIN MEDICATION!! - That will only mask your pain. Let's get to the root of it and FIX IT." - what great and HONEST medical advice!
After chiropractic, acupuncture and physical therapy (incl. aquatic therapy) resulted in minor improvements in my condition, I purchased this book on recommendation by Dr Sarno. After implementing it's exercises, I am happy to say that I am working again. Although I still have back pain sometimes, it is never to the extreme that I could not walk. I can overcome the pain now, also. Once again, I lead a normal life with no limitations.
My biggest advice prior to listening to this book is: DON'T have the attitude: "MY pain is too great for this!", "My pain is DIFFERENT" or "My pain is not in my head". IF you do, then you will be wasting your time. Some people I believe - I have met several - Want to be defined by their pain. Some enjoy the pitiful attention that comes with such pain. However, if you truly wish to be healed and you are truly tired of living on pain meds, on disability, and unable to enjoy life, then PLEASE submit to the ideas in this book. Do they exercises, and enjoy the results!

The far reaching effects of the knowledge contained in this book are a treasure yet to be fully appreciated. The immediate gratification I personally experienced were amazing! As I began this audible book, I limped around on a right foot with plantar fasciitis and a lower lumbar that prevented me from lifting anything over 20 lbs. As I began to draw attention to the concepts in this book, I realized I was having the best day I’ve had in over a year. I awoke this morning and stepped out of bad with no pain. As hokey as it may sound, I tell you in all honesty it is LEGIT!!!

life takes a u-turn
Dont miss this book if u ever felt back pain. It changed my life from a person who had become fearful of sitting for more than 10 min, going out of home for long and what not. It brought me back to my mountaineering, soccer days. Within a few weeks of listening to this book I was back on a trek at an altitude of 4400 mts and finished the trek in 2 days instead of avg 4 days. I started running after a period of year and a half. I bought back shoes for trekking, running and soccer all of which I had thrown away as doctors had said I would never be able to resume these activities. This book happens to be the biggest bliss to back pain sufferers. THere are no words to thank Dr Sarno for this approach to deal with back pain. Cheers Dr Sarno !!!

Save yourself
Save yourself, turn away from this dull, poorly written, laborious book, before it’s too late. This is essentially a pamphlet with one idea at its centre, repeated ad nausea, with long rambling tangents that explain why opposing ideas are incorrect. I can give you everything this book has in one line. Ready? Here you go; Your back pain isn’t physical, it’s psychological, most likely caused by repressed anger. That’s it, that’s all you’re getting. Personally, I’m on board with his thinking, so much so that I was open to the idea when he first presents it in the first few pages. I spent the rest of the book waiting to discover what to do with this dusty nugget of knowledge. While repeating it over and over he occasionally let’s slip a couple of clues about seeking out a psychotherapist, but also insists that most people won’t need it, and his program will be enough. I can only assume that his ‘programme’ is drip fed to us in a later book, which confirms that this book is, like I said, a pamphlet, promoting him and his single idea, without giving us any therapeutic information or guidance. Don’t waste your time or energy on it.

I've listened to it lots of times. It was easy to listen to, with the author having a great reading voice and very well structured. Complicated process's were explained in a very detailed way and I could understand the concepts that were being presented properly.
Most importantly the book has helped me to heal my back pain and tension heartaches. I would recommend this to anyone.

Very little substance
Writer has an I know it all, I figured out everything myself approach. Even though he has some interesting, possibly useful ideas, his approach, which frequently dismissing science is worrying. Also about 70% of the book he talks about persuading audience his method is best compared to everything else out there, including any scientific explanation for pain. In the rest of the book, he doesn’t fully explain his method but talks about how his method potentially will help to some hypothetical clients. All I could understood what his method is that it is a type of talk therapy. There is very little substance to the book as it reveals very little about his method.

Book doesn't deliver on the title promise
The contents of this book does not match the title. Most of the book can be summarized as this: your back pain is in your head. Loads of fluff and padding, but that's it. Your repressed emotions cause your back pain. I kept waiting for the "Healing your back pain" part. When it came - about fifteen minutes worth in the last half-hour of the book - it amounted to this: ignore your back pain. And if that doesn't work, get therapy.
I was sorry to have spent a full credit on this.

The only book you'll ever need to heal back pain
I was a little skeptical when I first started listening to this book, as I had suffered from back pain (fibromyalgia) for many years and tried countless treatments. As I listened to Dr. John Sarno's narration, I identified with everything he said. It was like he was describing me ??? my personality, my pain, and my pattern of symptoms and associated treatments. I threw all the treatments in the bin, said goodbye to my physiotherapist, and gradually got better within months.
Listen to Dr. Sarno, listen to your inner self, and you WILL recover from back pain without anything else but this book and a lot of patience. Good luck.

No i don't have TMS
I thought this was going to help and be about helping to heal or at least maintain back pain, i have a trapped nerve(crushed by scar tissue from surgery)This is the cause of my back pain. This is a book about TMS that is all about your pain being an extension of troubled life.I have an actual diagnosis so this entire book did not help at all. This book is for pain that has no real physical cause. My pain has a physical so this book was as useful as a chocolate fire guard to me.
Be warned if you have a diagnosis for the cause of your pain don't bother with this book.
