تدور أحداث الرواية في إطار اجتماعي معاصر، حول منطقة تاريخية مغمورة بالقاهرة تدعى "حوش الغجر" وتقع خلف سور مجرى العيون، كانت تأتي القبائل الغجرية إلى هذه المنطقة هاربة من الصعيد محاولين الاختباء، وينقسم الغجر في مصر إلى ثلاثة أقسام هي الغجر، والحلب، والنَوَر، ويطلق عليهم أيضًا الهنجرانية، والتتر، والمساليب، يرجع الى وجود الغجر في مصر إلى ما بين عامي 1546م و1549م، وقد اعتُبروا آنذاك غرباء في أرض مصر.
