"أتأمّل في الجثث التي لم يأتِ أحدٌ بَعْدُ لتسلّمها، وقد بدأ الازرقاق يغزوها. إعتدتُ منظرها. آنس إليها، إلى وجوه أصحابها، إلى ثيابهم، إلى الوضع الذي تيبّست فيه أبدانهم... ألفة غامضة تنشأ بيني وبينها.
أحفظ ملامح كلّ جثّة على رغم التبدّل الذي يطرأ عليها ساعةً فساعة. ملامح كانت طافحة بِدَم العافية، لَون الحياة. وراحت تذوي حتى مال لونها إلى الصفرة المتّشحة بالزرقة، هذا المزيج هو لون الموت. كرهتُ اللون الأزرق الذي هو الإشارة الأولى لبدء ذبول البدن ثم تحلّله. ولطالما تفاديتُ النظر إلى السماء في أيّام الصحو، كي لا تذكّرني زرقتها بزرقة الموت.
كنت أحزن لدى رحيل جُثث عرفتُ حكاية موت أصحابها...".
