وتحكي القصة الأسطورية، كما يرويها جاكوبو دي فيرجين في كتابه قراءات القديسيين عن قدوم القديس جورج إلى مدينة سيلين، حيث وصل إلى هناك ليجد تنينا تقدم له القرابين البشرية من أبناء المدينة كل سنة، ليتقو شره، وفي تلك السنة وقعت القرعة على إبنة الملك لتقدم قرباناً إلى التنين ليأكلها، حاول الملك التملُص لإنقاذ إبنته، لكن الشعب رفض تغيير القرعة لأنهم أيضاً فقدوا أولادهم وأحبائهم، وعندما سمع القديس جورج بالقصة، أقترح أن يصارع التنين وسط دهشة الجميع، دخل القديس جورج في معركة مع التنين، وقتله بالفعل، وأنتشرت القصة وأصبح منذ ذلك اليوم رمزاً دينيا وثقافياً كبيراً جداً لدى المسيحيين، وقد سميت آلاف الكنائس بإسمه
