About this listen

James Phelps explores all the questions that we can only barely imagine the answers to about Australia's toughest jails. This is a brutal and honest account of life inside Australia's toughest jails, and all is not as you would expect.

Do women rape each other? Do guards really trade 40-cent phone cards for sex? And do you think the most dangerous inmate in Australia is a man?

This is the most comprehensive ever account of women's prison life yet. You will hear about rapists, drug dealers, fallen celebrities and Australia's most feared prisoner: the self-mutilating murderer, Rebecca Butterfield.

the way the narrator described some words was hard to get past but good book

The presenter try’s to do female voices instead of just reading and it’s painful. Also slightly degrading of the women’s quotes within the book as it sounds sarcastic and pandering. Maybe a female reader would have been the better choice.

Bit of a shocker audio wise

Amazing book and the narration really suits the book. Will read the other titles from the same writer & narrator.

Great book

While the stories were interesting I believe a female narrator or at least a mix would have made this easier to listen to
I also had problems with the download

Great story - did not like the narration

the 'female' voice' the male narrator puts on for female characters is totally irritating and third rate.

Narration is grating

I learnt so much about
Australian women’s jails. I was under the impression that jails in Australia were very cushy and relaxed in comparison over in the United States. However after listening to this story now I realise how wrong I was. The narration was incredible really sanded like different people when he voiced the characters.

Very interesting story with fantastic narration

Didn’t love the narrator but the book in itself was great. The stories and people are nuts

I have a new understanding to the life of a female prisoner that’s for sure.
Creativity at its best
Hilarious

Outstanding

I feel like the narrating should’ve been done by a male and a female, you made females sound weak and vulnerable and pathetic when that’s not how we are at all, overall the book was amazing very insightful and very interesting but I think if you gonna write about women’s prisons and the women that are in prison then you should probably use a woman’s voice for those parts.

Very interesting. However!!!
