تدور أحداث الرواية قبل ميلاد المسيح ب250 عامًأ أثناء حكم البطالمة لمصر وتبدأ الحكاية في ربيع عام ١٩٢٤ وبعد الكشف عن مقبرة الملك "توت عنخ آمون"، حيث اندفع "هوارد كارتر" إلى القنصلية الإنجليزية بالقاهرة دُون سابق إخطار، مُطالباً بتدخل دبلوماسي لإرغام السلطات المصرية على تجديد تصريح التنقيب الذي تم إلغاؤه لِما وجدته مصلحة الآثار من تلاعب في سجلات المقبرة حيث عُثر على قطع أثرية لم تدوَّن، مُخبأة في صندوق نبيذ بمقبرة أخرى.

أفضى القنصل إلى "هوارد كارتر" بأن التدخل يُعد مستحيلاً في ظل الظروف الحالية، فما كان من "كارتر" إلا أن احتد مُهدِّدًا بأنه إن لم يتلقَّ ترضية كافية و عادلة، فسيكشف للعالم نصوص البرديات التي عثر عليها بغرفة دفن الملك، بما فيها من أسرار لم تُكتشف من قبل!!
