This is Britain as you've never heard it.
This is Britain as it has never been told.
From Newcastle to Cornwall, from the birth of the 20th century to the teens of the 21st, Girl, Woman, Other follows a cast of 12 characters on their personal journeys through this country and the last hundred years. They're each looking for something - a shared past, an unexpected future, a place to call home, somewhere to fit in, a lover, a missed mother, a lost father, even just a touch of hope....
Critic Reviews
"The actress Anna-Maria Nabirye projects the characters superbly: she has a full, low timbre and a powerful directness." (The Times)
"Masterful...A choral love song to black womanhood in modern Great Britain." (Elle)
"Ambitious, flowing and all-encompassing, an offbeat narrative that'll leave your mind in an invigorated whirl...[It] unites poetry, social history, women's voices and beyond." (Stylist)

An utterly captivating listen. Excellent narration. Evaristo deserved to win the Booker Prize outright for this compelling masterpiece.

playing with stereotypes
entertaining use of stereotypes, with rich details of clothing, food, housing, somehow put together to tell you about the great diversity that is individuals.

The story is really catchy, the way she relates all the characters and separated stories is very skilled and unexpected. Loved it.

Amazing
I think this was my favourite book I read in 2021. I love how you learn about so many characters from their own perspective, and how they are all interconnected- so you can see their story through the eyes of others aswell.
It made me think about personal and public history, social class, gender norms, inter generational impacts and trauma- all in a very palpable and empathetic way.

Thoroughly Enjoyable Read
Wonderful portrayal of 12 Black women with razor sharp insight. Their stories told with humour, insight and sometimes confronting conventional attitudes.

Diverse Black women voices
A sweeping novel of present and historical realities of Black women in Britain and beyond. A fabulous portrayal of life, it's challenges with a no holds barred approach towards a diverse range of characters. I'll admit I ended up googling a character map to keep up after not reading for a few days! This was the flaw for me as a reader: too many characters to really connect to which made the story somewhat disjointed. That said, an unforgettable literary feat well-deserving of its critical acclaim.

Clever and poignant.
Just like any good book - I couldn't put this down. The narrator became each character seamlessly. I enjoyed the rawness and intergenerational flow - connection and variety of lives merging.
