يعيد "سعيد خطيبي" في روايته "أربعون عاماً في انتظار إيزابيل" إحياء واحدة من الشخصيات التاريخية الأكثر إثارة للجدل، وهي الكاتبة والرحّالة السويسرية إيزابيل إيبرهارت (1877-1904)، التي عاشت جزءاً من حياتها القصيرة في الجزائر. وذلك عن طريق حكاية "جوزيف" الفنان الفرنسي الذي رحل عن بلده ليستقر في الجزائر برفقة صديقه "سلمان" أربعين عاما يدخل خلالها الإسلام لكنه في قرارة نفسه كان ضائعًا، وفي تلك الفترة يعثر على كتابات إيزابيل، يُعجب بشخصيتها الفذة وبكتاباتها العميقة فصار يبحث عن التقاطعات بينه وبينها، وبدأ برسم لوحات فنية عن هذه اليوميات...

تتقاطع حياة "جوزيف" مع حياة "إيزابيل" في أكثر من مستوى، فالاثنان جاءا من أوروبا ليعيشا في صحراء الجزائر، وكليهما اعتنق الإسلام، كما أنه يحاول أن يكتب نصاً عن يومياته يشبه النص الذي كتبته هي، نصاً يحكي فيه عن أربعين عاماً عاشها وهو في حوار دائم مع ما كتبته، أربعين عاماً قضاها مقتفياً آثارها ليبحث عما خفي من سيرتها...

لكنّه وبعد هذه الفترة الطويلة من حياته ومقارنة كتابات إيزابيل بإنجازاته يتخذ قرارًا غريبًا يعود فيه إلى نقطة الصفر!!...
