In Phryne's third adventure, Phryne is off to Ballarat for a week of fabulousness, but the sedate journey by train turns out to be far from the restful trip she was planning. An orchestral conductor has been found dead and Detective Inspector Jack Robinson needs the delightfully incisive and sophisticated Miss Fisher's assistance. Hugh Tregennis has been murdered in a most flamboyant mode by a killer with a point to prove. But how many killers is Phryne really stalking? At the same time, the dark curls and disdainful air of mathematician and code-breaker Rupert Sheffield are taking Melbourne by storm. They've certainly taken the heart of Phryne's old friend from the trenches of WWI, John Wilson. Phryne recognises Sheffield as a man who attracts danger and is determined to protect John from harm.

Onetime adventurer and now amateur sleuth Lady Eleanor Swift is attending the annual royal regatta with her new pal Tipsy Fitzroy. Tipsy has Eleanor trussed up like a debutante in a new dress, determined to turn her into a proper society lady. Even Eleanor’s favorite companion, Gladstone the bulldog, has a new outfit for the occasion. But the sparkling prize-giving ceremony is interrupted when the devilishly handsome host gulps his glass of champagne on stage and collapses to the floor. The victim is none other than the king’s cousin, Lord Xander Taylor-Howard.
Publisher's Summary
In this, the second Phryne Fisher mystery, the 1920s' most talented and glamorous detective flies even higher, handling a murder, a kidnapping and the usual array of beautiful young men with style and consummate ease - and all before it's time to adjourn to the Queenscliff Hotel for breakfast. Whether she's flying planes, clearing a friend of homicide charges or saving a child from kidnapping, she handles everything with the same dash and elan with which she drives her red Hispano-Suiza.

The performance makes this so much better in audio
I don't tend to read a lot of series, definitely not a lot of mysteries, but I've always held that it is more about the characters and the setting that make a mystery series enjoyable. I adore Phryne Fisher, I can't help it. She is a worldly woman for the 1920s, unapologetically single and sexual with bobbed hair and wealth to spare. I had enjoyed the first book, Cocaine Blues, and was looking forward to reading more.
I will not read any more of these in print, because the audio version made it so much more enjoyable! Stephanie Daniel does an amazing job with the voices and the accents, and I was absorbed into the story. I actually didn't care about the mystery, not sure if that's good or bad, but just enjoyed the ride.
Stephanie Daniel does a brief interview with Kerry Greenwood at the end of the audiobook, and it highlighted some of the research that went into the story.

Much better than the first one...
Phryne Fisher is a very "modern" girl (the servants call her a vamp), which is fitting along with all of the other things she takes on that were formerly exclusive provinces of men. These books illustrate how the world changed immeasurably for women as a result of the Great War, but largely in a lighthearted way. The Australian setting is different, too. I did enjoy this one much more than the first of the series (Cocaine Blues). I couldn't like Phryne Fisher in the first book -- I think she was too abrasive and I didn't really care about her. But in this book, Phryne has become a likable character and a bit of a heroine. The period flavor is substantial and the story is fun and moves quickly. I plan to read more of the series.

It's the bees knees!
Would you consider the audio edition of Flying Too High to be better than the print version?
Having never read the print version, I can't say if I would like it better. I can usually "hear" things in my head as I read the print versions, but having a native speaker read something like this makes it even more fun. I NEVER would have guessed how they pronounce Phryne.
What did you like best about this story?
This is full of high spirited adventure. I have always wanted to learn to fly, and back then it was so "by the seat of your pants." The machines were simpler, the hazards were natural, and the other traffic was nominal. It had a more human scale and so was fun. I also love the fact that Phryne can fix EVERYTHING, including the situations her friends get into!
Which character ??? as performed by Stephanie Daniel ??? was your favorite?
Well, Phryne, of course! But, they were all well played, she didn't lose track of them either.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I ended up with it on my iPod in my pocket as I went through the day so I wouldn't miss a moment, but could get on with errands and such. Everyone thinks I'm listening to music.

Least favorite on TV - happily book diverges A LOT
This was so different from the TV version that it was almost like reading a different book, and I was very glad of it. One of the two plot threads -- the kidnapping of little Candida -- was not in the TV version, and I found this thread the more appealing one. The other thread - a possible patricide -- happily did not have Phryne's running off to fly her plane to the wilds to talk with and also sleep with the big brother of the suspect. (He sure didn't appeal to me.) I liked the book SO much better than the TV episode -- which was my LEAST favorite one. I wasn't thrilled with Phryne's walking on the wing of the plane but I guess fiction is meant to let you share what you can't do... I didn't see the need for her to hang onto the back of the car either -- overworked my already straining suspended disbelief. Missing from the TV version are the sister of the suspect, who's an artist, and her fiancee, a sculptor -- really liked these two characters. Spoiler alert: I was shocked at Phryne's interlude with the fiancee... Guess the sexual revolution of the 60s left me with more hangups than I thought... I was also (spoiler alert) glad she found a way for Mike to escape kidnapping charges but shocked at the deal she made with the truly evil kidnapper -- even though she found a way to do it that satisfied him without any more children suffering. The woman Phryne hired rather horrified me when she said she'd do it for free -- she must have one twisted past of her own, and I sure hope it's included in a Phryne book. A parallel issue was the female artist's dark childhood -- my mom used to say these things didn't happen when she was a kid and I said they DID happen but were kept SECRET. Phryne's shining a light.
On the whole, SO much better than the TV version, had to give it a 4.

What A FUN series!
Plenty of humor, great characters, A bit of history, and a good mystery.
My only complaint is that I wish Phyne was a little less free with her "favors."

More Phyrne please
She is fun, fearless, frivolous and utterly fabulous. This series is excellent light entertainment - the cosy mystery at it's best. The decadent 1920's really comes to life in this series, and although we know that it ends on a much poorer note for so many, somehow it does not seem likely that that the canny Phyrne Fisher will be one of them. I want to know for sure though. Can we have the whole series here, please?
