About this listen

Accustomed to both murder and dalliance, Australia's favourite detective, the inimitable Miss Fisher, returns in a case that will test her tact and judgement to the full.

When the redoubtable Miss Phryne Fisher receives threatening letters at her home, she enlists the unflappable apprentice Tinker to investigate. But as the harassment of Phryne threatens to spin out of control, her lover, Lin Chung is also targeted.

Meanwhile, Dot begins to fear that her fiance, newly promoted Sergeant Hugh Collins, has gone cold on setting a date for their wedding. Phryne's clever daughters, Ruth and Jane, begin their own investigation into suspiciously dwindling funds when they are sent to help at the Blind Institute.

None of this is quite enough to prevent Phryne from accepting an invitation to a magnificent party at the house of the mysterious Hong. When the party is interrupted by shocking tragedy, Phryne gathers all of her unerring brilliance to track down the miscreants. With some unlikely assistance, Phryne is in a race against time to save a pair of young lovers from disgrace and death.

Miss Fisher solves the case(s) again!
Another story with multiple mysteries solved, by all. I actually enjoy the Jane, Ruth, and Tinker subplots and the additional mysteries added to the story.
We also have a new narrator - Wendy Bos, who I really hope will continue tobe the new voice of Phryne Fisher! Wendy had some big shoe to fill after the passing of Stephanie Daniel, but she has filled them well! None of her accents felt forced or put on, and there was a much more of a relaxed listen to this book - compared to the last book which I chose in the end not to listen to, and read it myself. I can’t wait for the next book.
Finally: Dear Kerry, I am so sorry to hear that your cat Belladonna crossed the rainbow bridge — your antidote of her time with you had me in tears. I am so sorry for your loss.

I’ve never not enjoyed a Phyrne story before but I found the narration irritating causing me to lose pace with the narrative.

Narration distracting

Another winning Phryne Fisher yarn from the illustrious pen of the Honourable Kerry Greenwood!
Appreciated the apt narration performed by Wendy Bos.
Great to read more of the young folks' detection work in Murder in Williamstown.

Winning!

I do love the Phryne Fisher mysteries. Even though Wendy Bos did a good job narrating this I believe Stephanie Daniels is the best narrator of the Phryne Fisher mysteries.

Most Enjoyable

the narration is nearly unbearable. unfortunately Stephanie Daniels had done such an amazing job with previous novels in the series, the disparity in performance and skill of the reading is painful. I couldn't finish listening to the whole story.

couldn't bear the narration to finish the book

Definitely not Phryne at her best. Agree that there are puzzling inconsistencies in the timeline and Phryne herself is less adroit than usual. Her vocabulary and even descriptions of her clothing choices don’t seem to be up to her usual standards.
The narrator was overly conscientious rather than smooth and there were occasional mispronunciations and strange timing. Usually I luxuriate in the wonderful world created and appreciate the research into interesting historical events and times. Not a good choice if this is your first introduction to Miss Fisher.

A reasonable read

Not a bad story but not the Phryne I know and love. Whether that is because the narrator has changed or because there are inconsistencies in the back story to earlier books im not sure. still a good listen

something lost

It’s not as tight as usual and there are inconsistencies with earlier character development.
The worst part is the narrator is all wrong. Her voice is not that of Phryne Fisher and it spoils the whole experience . She would be better suited to children’s books. Please bring back Stephanie Daniels, described by Kerry herself in an earlier audiobook as “the voice of Phryne Fisher”. If that’s not possible then someone of like tone.

Spoiled by the wrong narrator

I usually love these audio books and tried really hard to get through it but the new narrator falls short. She sounds stilted and uses pauses and intonations in all the wrong places. It’s hard to decipher the different characters and sounds too Australian as Phryne. I actually couldn’t finish it. Such a shame. I was so looking forward to it.

Please find a new narrator

Awful narration. Really breathy with emphasis placed inappropriately. There’s not enough difference between the characters in this sort of novel. Doesn’t anyone direct anymore?
