تبدأ الحكاية بمخرج سينمائي يدعى "خليل" اختار أن يسكن في حيّ عشوائي على تخوم دمشق حيث أنجز فيلمه الأول عن المهمشين، وبدأ التفكير في كتابة سيناريو فيلمه الجديد انطلاقاً من صورة امرأة جميلة، خارقة رآها في المنام تركب قطاراً يجتاز الصحراء بسرعة مفرطة....

لكنَّ نقطة الانطلاق كانت بعثوره على امرأة تشبه أو تعادل تلك التي رآها في الحلم، وهي "سارة" التي يقرر بأنّها كانت امرأة المنام لكن هناك مشكلة أنَّ هذا المخرج الفذ نفسه قد كان على علاقة سابقة مع جارته زهور القاطنة بجواره فوق السطح مع زوجها العسكريّ المعطوب الذي يبيع السجائر والحشيش وقد كان يظنها هي امرأة المنام !!

أثناء حيرته أتيح لخليل أن يشاهد سارة ترقص رقصاً حديثاً فوق خشبة المسرح، فعثر في حركاتها وتعبيرية جسدها المتناسق على صورة امرأة المنام والتي تصلح لتمثيل دورها في الفيلم الذي شرع في كتابة تفاصيله لكنَّ معرفته لساره عن قرب قد شكلَّت عنده التباسًا عميقًا...

من خلال محاولة خليل استكمال عناصر السيناريو، يفكر في نموذج ثالث للمرأة يجده ممثّلاً في ناريمان الراقصة المومس ذات الجسد الشهواني المبتذل.... لكن، ما الذي يجمع بين النساء الثلاث في فيلم خليل؟

ومن منهنَّ ستكون امرأة المنام؟!..إنّها رواية البحث عن الذات ليس أكثر !!
