Publisher's Summary

Light in the Darkness. Hope in the Wilderness.

Despite his deep desire to overcome mental illness and lead others out of their own pain, pastor Andrew Stoecklein died by suicide at the age of 30. In the wake of the tragedy, his widow, Kayla, embarked on a journey to better understand Andrew’s harrowing battle, come alongside those with similar struggles, and help the church overcome the stigma of suicide.

Fear Gone Wild is Kayla’s intimate account of all that led to the heartbreaking day of Andrew’s death and the insights she has gleaned since then about the wilderness experience. From her own hard-won understanding, Kayla offers:

  • Hope for those facing a mental health diagnosis, wisdom for family and friends, and companionship for anyone who has lost a loved one to suicide
  • An exploration of Jesus’ wilderness experience and what it means for our own journeys
  • Helpful information about panic attacks, anxiety, depression, and living with fear
  • Truth in the face of myths and misconceptions about suicide
  • And practical guidance for the church in handling mental health challenges

This heartfelt, hope-filled book equips us to walk alongside someone on their journey with mental illness, offers strength for those of us struggling with depression or anxiety, and turns each of us again and again to the comfort of a God who never leaves.

Wow

When I first learned of that happened I was in a deep dark place of depression and pain. I was so moved by Kayla’s willingness to share her grief that I decided to reach out for help when the opportunity presented itself. I love that she wrote this book and a beautiful reminder that we are indeed human and God’s love for us is absolutely unconditional! This book is so necessary and I’m thankful it was written! God bless!

Better than I anticipated (and my anticipation was high)

I have been excited for this book since the day Kayla announced she was working on it. I can’t explain it, but it exceeded my expectations. I knew she had a way with words, but the way she sees and shares God’s work in her life is amazing. I can’t wait to read it again and share with those around me!

A Must Read

At first, I hesitated to read her book because I didn't want to walk through the pain of Andrew, her husband, taking his life. He was a friend and my pastor.  I am so glad I read her book. I highly recommend it to everyone.  It is a love story, mixed with a tragedy, and covered in God's love. She speaks hope loud and clear.  Kayla is a brave young woman who tells her story with honesty and love. Plus, she is a beautiful writer.   Don't be misled by the subject matter - her book is for everyone. I bought the book and then decided to listen to it on audible to hear Kayla's sweet voice.

Will bring tears to your eyes, truly eye-opening, definitely a must-read!

I have followed her story from the beginning but got an in-depth look into her and Andrew’s life. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, this is a great read for guidance. She is so raw and transparent, I love it. It is also a great read for those struggling with grief. Highly recommend this book!

A beautifully told story of hope, faith, and grace

I can’t tell you how much this book helped me understand more about suicide, how to help those who may be suffering from mental illness, and the healing process. As someone who has experienced loss of a loved one through suicide this book brought me a new found sense of hope. Thank you Kayla for sharing your story.
