Michail Lermontow starb mit nur 29 Jahren im Morgengrauen des 27. Juli 1841 in einem Duell. Der einzige vollendete Roman des Dichters Lermontow etablierte ihn als einen der großen Vertetreter der russischen Literatur neben seinem Vorbild Puschkin. Mit seiner verfeinerten Technik der psychologischen Analyse weist "Ein Held unserer Zeit" als erster psychologischer Roman der russischen Literatur voraus auf die großen Werke Dostojewskijs und Tolstois.
