Interesting story
- By Tarcha on 16-07-2017
Publisher's Summary
With Unity formed, Gunnar feels like he's created a family like he's never had before. All that's left is to grow in strength, continue building in Edgewood, and maybe earn a little affection from Princess Adeelee. Nothing can tear him away from his friends and newly founded guild.
Or can it?
Gunnar still has a lot to learn about his massive, new world. There are eyes and ears everywhere. Deception can come when you least expect it, and in Eden's Gate, sometimes you can lose control of your own fate.
And Rachel? Maybe she's still out there...somewhere.

Felt like a filler arc- than a logical progression
its basically an expansion of a single part of the succession quest, the earth stuff build up seems contrived as the gov would do alot more and the pro players are basically guaranteed an impact on the story based on how long they built this up. I simply don't see how all the build up will lead to something satisfying. will listen more just to make sure.

this was the best book of the series so far. The writer is getting into his zone with the story and the plot is developing very well.

MC is too stupid to be alive.
If he was a real person he would have died in childhood due to his inability to use a spoon successfully. The MC was pretty dumb in the first two books but the plot was good enough that I was able to slog through it. In this book he is so consistently moronic that I found myself wanting to punch the author in the face. By about 2/3's of the way through it was so bad that the book became unlistenable. I couldn't finish it. Stay away. Don't waste your credit.

Moron Protagonist Syndrome.
Super gamer nerd that does nothing but game all day every day but somehow doesn't understand rpg tropes, has to have a moral crisis every 10 minutes about NPCs, and whines about everything unexpected or difficult like the world is out to personally do him wrong. This series started great, so I'm really not sure why the author wants to make the MC a Shinji level bitch.

Protagonist continues to flounder.
Any additional comments?
I have the first two in this series and enjoyed both. There was solid character building in the first two with a sense of the main character increasing in power, at least numerically. In this I was hoping to see some thought put into his plans and his actions. Nope. He remains an idiot. He seriously feels like a side character where the author gives you just enough backstory on him so that when he kills him off in 3 or 4 pages you'll be like "oh, damn".
He literally NEVER has a plan, doesn't even try to come up with any. He blunders his way through the book with no forethought, after thought or even interesting internal monologue. It's mostly just "I am happy" or "this makes me sad" or "this is frightening". It just him reacting to base emotions and not in anyway thinking through them in any meaningful way.
Perhaps this is done on purpose by the author to give him a more interesting growth story later. But this is book three. By this point I should at least like or hate the main character. But I am amazingly ambivalent about him. I just don't care what happens to him. Every character surrounding the MC is more interesting. I think I am going to have to pass on further installments unfortunately. Wasted potential.

I wanted to like this book
I wanted to like this book. Got through 2/3 of it but couldn’t finish it. The MC is just so stupid I actually found my self legitimately angry about it. For a MC that is a “gamer” but then doesn’t know how literally anything about gaming is pathetic. Common sense is something this character does not have and I promise you will find your self annoyed many times during this book.

Stop writing characters as if they are morons.
Overall the story is decent. My main issue is when writers make their characters into morons when it comes to their plot. ***SPOILERS AHEAD READ AT YOUR OWN RISK*** Gunnar not being able to connect the dots right off after recalling to a stone other than the one he expected is so unbelievable. This guy is an experienced gamer for crying out loud, the twist is so cliche. I myself have played many games that have done this same thing. He gets dumped in the exact desert that an NPC just asked him to travel to so as to rescue said NPC's wife. He instead thinks he had been deceived by the Elven Princess he lusts after. Hell man, the NPC that tricked him into Recalling in the desert was known to be a member of a thieves guild. He then proceeds to make newbie mistake after newbie mistake. Why not kill as many Slavers as possible prior to freeing the other slaves, wake up the other slaves prior to freeing them so they are ready to fight. When escaping with the wife, how does one not plan ahead and get basic information. These are all newbie mistakes. I'm not sure if the author is much of a gamer, or just someone cashing in on the popularity of this genre. Having gamed tabletop RPGs and online MMOs, FPS, and more, I take what I experienced from game to game and many times can quest pretty accurately what a quest is going to entail. Maybe it was the editor that ask for these changes and not the author, if that is the case, time for a new editor.

Tldr: protag gets lucky a lot
Tldr: This books protagonist doesn't seem to have anything special about him. His personality is almost non existent yet every female character who spends time around him inexplicably begins falling for him. He skids by on the gods own luck since he doesn't seem to actually think outside every other instance of "brilliance" that I found to be either not the best option or just plainly the obvious choice, and speaking of choice! The morale dilemmas in this book are both under played and not that great.

Trash, dont bother
This book has a lot of potential, but it was written by someone who it’s evident doesn’t know anything about RPG games. The (MC) Main Character is indecisive and weak, you tell me that after 20 days if you are a serious gamer you don’t know how to power level. Seriously trash, and how come he couldn’t put it all together that he was in the endless sands. I figured it out the minute they started to talk about a sea of sands, this guy is no real gamer and the writer needs to understand the people who buys these books are gamers. Having a shitty lead like this that doesn’t know how to properly level or even build his character after 20 days in is no gamer at all. After 20 days at the rate he’s playing say 10 hours per day, counting resting and hard mobs he needed to be level 40 at the lowest. Getting the legendary blade and not killing the head of the sparrow is also not someone a real gamer would do. After heard that scene, I had already thought up 3 different plans on how to get in and out and not die, he also dies too much and doesn’t seem to be able to think through a simple problem. This book is nothing like Chaos Seeds by Aleron Kong or any other RPG. This is written for someone who doesn’t know anything about RPG. Don’t waste your money or credit on it.

GOOD BOOK
I have over 300 audible titles and I have to say that the narration and performance of this book is one of the best I've heard. It's a compelling universe with a great story and awesome characters

This series is like ready player one for the rpg players, instead of arcade and old consoles. It all works. All of it. I love it.

so so
there are a lot of points in this story when the hero is incredibly stupid and the people around him respond with no intelligence, for example when he is undercover the evil sand man reminds him to stay in character. it gets really cheesy and characters break character to follow the storyline. the stats are important in this type of book, almost every enemy seems to do basic attacks that take 25-50% health, the battle system doesn't seem to be thought through!
