Moo review (amazing)
- By Anonymous User on 23-10-2017
Publisher's Summary
Audiobook five of the best-selling Eden's Gate series!
After the turmoil in the Arena, Gunnar retreats from Highcastle and attempts to maintain a low profile while the heat regarding Reborns subsides.
Avoiding the human cities, he sets out to unexplored lands with guild mates and a potential new recruit. But when his Great Beast goes missing, a simple quest turns into a troubling chain of events that spawns several unanswered questions.
Why is Sora unresponsive? And why are dragons threatening the inhabitants of Eden's Gate?
The king’s health may be postponing Dryden’s plans, but Gunnar’s saboteurs might have disturbed something that could be even more devastating than a Bloodletter invasion.
Can Gunnar mend the thin thread that’s holding the world from falling into chaos, and after more than a month in Eden’s Gate, will he finally cave to the temptations of an elf?

The author has too much ownership of the MC.
All the set up for the eventual betrayal and seeing into the future though the abstract intervention of the game system is a little coddling to the MC. The MC constantly picks up on signs that the new guild member is suspect and its mostly done for the reason that they dont want the mc to look incompetent once it does take place. I never really feel like the Mc is in any danger or will make any meaningful progress in character. most of the conflict comes through relationships and his nightmares. It feels like end game content while the normal adventures are just going through the motions.
hopefully all this build up leads to something thrilling where the mc can let go and do something a bit selfless that doesn't end up benefiting him in someway down the line intentionally or not.

Want a story where the MC is BAMF, not this MC.
I've listened to plenty of books (including the other books of this series) and I have never wanted to reach through the pages of a book to slap the speech or outright strangle a MC. Gunner is a spineless idiot and continues to surprise me with his overwhelming stupidity and cowardice. when you're screaming for the MC to grow balls and routing for him to die your story is SHITE!!!

Gunner is really REALLY stupid.
I really like this series, but oh my god is Gunner stupid. Like, pants on head kind of stupid.
I don't really understand how, by book 5, he is this naive about basic concepts like a person's motivation, simple statements of phrase and intent, and other regular concepts that would be something easy to understand in the real world. Yet for some reason, he is absolutely clueless in this game setting, and it's utterly baffling. I mean, characters will make simple, common statements, and he will constantly, and repeatedly respond with "What do you mean? What's going on? What is happening?" Sometimes all in the same statement. I repeatedly let out an exasperated growl, and rolled my eyes while listening to this book, he was so obtuse.
Also, the author's idea of "gamer speak" is absolutely cringeworthy. Nobody speaks like that in real life. Why? Because it sounds stupid. And real humans actually understand that when they speak, which is why you never hear anyone actually speaking like that. So I find it utterly baffling that they would speak like that in the "game" world, simply because it's a game. It's still them in a real interaction, and talking like a normal person. But it's with this brain dead "for shizzle my nizzle! that's a whole snack!" crap, that sounds like an old guy who asked "So what are the kids saying these days with their internet slang?" And just did a google search or something for phrases, without actually considering context, or ironic usage.
The series is good, like I said, and the narrator is great, love him. But, I dunno, the writing has some painful components, that, after 5 books, are starting to seriously drag down the enjoyment of the series. Adding a second character (Jeremy) that behaves almost exactly like Aaron, definitely isn't helping either.
If you enjoyed the previous books, this is more of the same, and it's good. But if the parts that annoyed me, also annoy you, brace yourself because they are still there.

Main characters stupidity getting old
I am considering not purchasing and continuing with this series because the main character is such a wimpy, whiny idiot. He doesn't think situations through and worries more about his pain when he is in a video game, rather than what is needed to take the smart actions that would improve his situations.

Mildly enjoyable storyline that dissapoints.
its largely an enjoyable story but the blatant misoginy in the subtext just got too offensive for me to listen to and non existance of any queerness or diversity made me so bored. I hung on this long hoping the series would get better about it but it got worse. And the main character has no love for Rachel that he forgets exists half the time... all the elf tits im guessing... eugh bored.

Reasonably good series overall.
I have quite enjoyed these books. I like most of the characters in it, though I do find I don't like the main character that much. It's good to have a flaw, but he is pretty disgusting for me. He is selfish, takes out any bad outcome on his friends by ignoring them being hostile. He treats women dreadfully as if the only person that matters is him and what he is going to get out of them. Claims to care about them but clearly has no concept of what that actually means.
My main issue is how dumb he and his friends are. I don't know if this is intended or if the author themselves is not cabable of writing a plot that doesn't make the characters look stupid. It's been a theme through all the series. As an example in this book there is a kidnapping and they put the blame on group solely based on one bit of information rather than all of the information they had. If the reader can work it out in five seconds who did it then it just gets annoying when the characters all don't ask very obvious questions. Even if they would not have been certain based on all the information it would certainly have lead them in a better direction and a more believable one too for them.
Overall it is a pretty good read, but I have to drop a story to 3 stars when I'm driven crazy by repeated dumb actions, a plot I can see through in a handful of heartbeats and a character that claims to care for people one second and then throws them into situations that are pretty much certain to get some of them killed.

Great story but English words are used strangely
For example the word “smirk” is used when the context would suggest “smile”. A smirk is an unpleasant expression.
The term “ I rattled my head” is used frequently by Gunnar and the third party, ” he/she rattled his/her her head” presumably where “ I shook my head” as if to clear my thoughts rather than indicate the negative, no!
However these anomalies aside, I love the stories and I do like the narrator he has a really listenable to voice and he manages to let you know when a character change takes place. I have come across at least one who’s inflection never changed making it difficult to follow the story because you never knew who was speaking.

Great addition
The story progressed nicely, there were a couple of decisions that irked me as a gamer, but it's relatable.
