لم يرغب نجيب محفوظ في كتابة سيرته، فنأى عن تمثيل دور البطولة، أو إغراقنا في تفاصيل طفولته وريعان شبابه وكيف تفادى الحوادث الجسام وكيف استقبل لحظات الظفر الكبرى.

كان أديبًا متمكنًا يستطيع كتابة مجلد عن سيرته، مرضٍ لجميع القراء والنقاد ويحدث ضجة إعلامية في الصحف والمجلات. ولكن اهتم محفوظ بأصداء حياته، فأصداء الحياة تمنحنا المعنى الذي هو رجع الحياة حين ينتهي الحدث، المعنى الذي يظل الإنسان يعدو ليصل إليه وقد لا يصل بعد شقاء، أما الحياة ذاتها فهي المتن المليء بالأحداث، وفي الأحداث تفاصيل تحول بيننا وبين المعاني...

لذا فقد جاء كتابه "أصداء السيرة الذاتية" مكونًا من نصوص قصيرة تجمع بين السيرة الذاتية والتأمل الفلسفي والحدث القصصي المركز، يتجول فيها "نجيب محفوظ" بين ذكرياته وخواطره وفلسفته ، فهو لم يكتب سيرته الذاتية بشكل مباشر، إلا أننا نجد حياته ملخصة فى جميع قصص المجموعة التي يتحدث فيها عن حبه الأول والمستحيل ، ويتحدث عن سعد زغلول الزعيم الذى بقي نجيب محفوظ مخلصاً لذكراه حتى أيامه الأخيرة ، وكذلك يتحدث عن السياسيين الذين عاصرهم ، وعن زملائه وأدبائه ، وعن زوجته وبناته.

ويعتبر النقاد أن هذه المجموعة من أهم ما كتب "نجيب محفوظ" وتمثل خلاصة فنه وتجربته وخبرته فى الحياة..
