What if your whole world was a lie? What if a single revelation - like a single choice - changed everything? What if love and loyalty made you do things you never expected? The faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered - fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she's known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.

Story
Katniss Everdeen, girl on fire, has survived, even though her home has been destroyed. Peeta has been captured by the Capitol. District 13 really does exist. There are rebels. There are new leaders. A revolution is unfolding. It is by design that Katniss was rescued from the arena in the cruel and haunting Quarter Quell, and it is by design that she has long been part of the revolution without knowing it. District 13 has come out of the shadows and is plotting to overthrow the Capitol. Everyone, it seems, has had a hand in the carefully laid plans - except Katniss.

Story
When the doors of the lift crank open, the only thing Thomas remembers is his first name. But he's not alone. He's surrounded by boys who welcome him to the Glade - a walled encampment at the centre of a bizarre and terrible stone maze. Like Thomas, the Gladers don't know why or how they came to be there - or what's happened to the world outside. All they know is that every morning when the walls slide back, they will risk everything - even the Grievers, half-machine, half-animal horror that patrol its corridors, to try and find out.

A dystopian trilogy, the Divergent series begins when Tris and “Four” (Tobias) turn 16. They do not fit into only one of five possible faction choices, so they are labeled Divergent. This labeling is the initial conflict in the trilogy. The many additional conflicts plus themes of sacrifice, freedom, individuality, and guilt are woven throughout the three novels, and they can all be traced with the help of this sidekick.

Slow starting, but Great Character Development
What made the experience of listening to Divergent the most enjoyable?
This book takes a while to get started, but its all about character development. Only in the last quarter of the book does anything really happen. But its worth the wait and I'm thinking that the next book in the series will benefit from this prolonged character development.
What other book might you compare Divergent to, and why?
The hunger games, but the hunger games is better :).
Which scene did you most enjoy?
I have to admit that the scene where Tris admits that Four/Tobias was in her Fearscape was refreshingly innocent and kind of funny.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Not the way that the Hunger Games did but i still found this book kept my curiosity intrigued
Any additional comments?
This is a pretty good read. Its enjoyable, fairly original and I found it difficult to predict what was going to happen next, which is a good thing. I hate it when you can predict everything that is going to happen... I'm looking forward to reading "Insurgent" and "Allegiant".

Completely Addicted
What made the experience of listening to Divergent the most enjoyable?
The story line is interesting and despite comparisons to The Hunger Games, I think that it is different and something I haven't heard before. You get to know the characters layer by layer so it's keeping me intrigued.
What other book might you compare Divergent to, and why?
It would have to be The Hunger Games as it's aimed at the same audience level so easy to listen to and captures my interest even though I'm in my late 30's. It also has a similar theme being that there are young people making choices because of the system of how the world works...
What about Emma Galvin’s performance did you like?
Love Emma's narration. Her voice sounds the right age of the main character who is narrating the book, but she also has subtle changes in her voice for other characters so you hear the change but it's not ridiculous.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
More intriguing than the hunger games!!
Any additional comments?
I only bought this book on Monday and it's now Thursday and I've only got an hour to go. I find myself driving around and around to hear more. It did help I had a 7 hour work trip through the week but I have just purchased the second book before even finishing this one. This is the first audiobook I've ever had and I love it.

Beautifully read - riveting
I had already seen the film and bought the third book to see how it all ended, but I enjoyed Emma's reading so much, I bought this one to enjoy her rendition. The film actually constructs a more exciting ending than the book, but it otherwise sticks pretty close. A very enjoyable listening experience. Emma *is* Tris.

loved it
I've tried a few audio books and have struggled to stay engaged. I'm sure this is partly due to my background as a voice over and writer for radio. I'm easily irritated I have to commend the production team, the direction and especially the voice actor. A beautiful execution. Thank you! Veronic Roth is a terrific writer. The ideas, themes, world and sci-fi elements are well thought out. i would've loved to have been inside her head when the inspiration bubbled up for this story line. What a wonderful mind, to create such a captivating story! I loved every minute of listening to this book and I am excited to move onto the next in the series. Thank you.

A great book
This story was a good YA book and I believe that teens will enjoy it the best. The whole concept was both unique and common. The tests that determine where you belong was like every other book on this topic. However, one of the factions controlling and also rebelling against the others was a cool idea. This was a great book.

Interesting concept but...
Where does Divergent rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Divergent is actually an interesting book. In particular the concept, however the series overall is extremely disappointing.
Has Divergent turned you off from other books in this genre?
I read the Hunger game series years before this series and this series is lacking in comparison. I enjoyed the concept/idea of this book, but be warned this is a trilogy.
What about Emma Galvin’s performance did you like?
I enjoyed her reading of the book(s) Pity the series overall is so lacking.
Any additional comments?
The first book is great. The second book is also pretty good. I hated the third book and not because of it's ending. I just could not finish the book. So for me this series would get 1 star. The only reason I know about "the gasp" ending is because someone it work asked me if that's why I didn't finish it. For anyone who enjoys a good, solid, well written ending to a series this series is not for you.

He said, she said, I said SCREAM
Would you try another book from Veronica Roth and/or Emma Galvin?
Yes I enjoyed reading the book and Emma Galvin is a great narrator
If you’ve listened to books by Veronica Roth before, how does this one compare?
Ok, honestly I thought I was going to throw my phone to the ground if I heard 'He said' 'I said' 'she said' one more time. It was doing my head in and I some how put up with it throughout the next two books
Did Emma Galvin do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Yes, the differences where there

I purchased this book as I had seen the film, and it did not disappoint.
The screenplay remained true to the book. It was easy to read but descriptive and engrossing. Listed as a book for teenagers, I found it enjoyable in the lack of adult themes. With an open mind, give it a try.

Took me three days cover to cover:)
Oh gosh I get that many may criticise it for being very basically written but as a sixteen year old myself I found it was engaging and easy to listen to throughout. The film is pretty boring in comparison and it still escapes me why they wouldn't develop the relationship between tobias and tris as much as there is in the book, and there is a lot more. Well over all I'm very very happy and can't wait to buy the rest of the series which I heard aren't as great of but I will hope anyway haha

Great for a teenager
I loved the concept of the book - absolutely brilliant! I enjoyed the characters but from an adult perspective it seemed too simple and lacked the complexity that could have made it so much more believable. It all seemed weird that an instructor falls for a child - a bit uncomfortable for an adult male to read in the last third of the book. Military structure and societal structure seems too unbelievable too but good enough to listen, and finish the text. It probably didn't help that I'd completed commando training, and listened to the book only to verify before allowing my child to read it! Needless to say this text is not suitable for a ten year old highly able reader. I do wish books had an age appropriate rating.

Lover of dystopia
So yes, it's a little like The Hunger Games, Uglies, Matched etc... but only in the same way that Pride and Prejudice is a little like Sense and Sensibility. Dystopian novels have become some of the most popular novels recently, and with the success of the big ones like The Hunger Games being transformed into high budget cinema I think it puts people off seeing dystopian novels as good literature. But in truth they make for such a great story because it's true escapism. The world is nothing like ours and there's always a complex political issue overriding all the smaller concepts of friendship, acceptance and usually a perfectly cheesy love story.
This book has all that. And I love it. Pure escapism. So what if the story isn't 'new'. Can't wait to read the next one...

Good book but the recording is not created well
there are no chapters on the audio book. for some reason, it doesn't show the time marker on the player. there is no way to know where you are in the book using the app. the download either contains bugs or was not created with the user in mind.

Getting too old for this...
This was always going to bring comparisons to the Hunger Games, and it does just enough to set its world apart. However reading the Hunger games in my early twenties and experiencing this closer to thirty makes the writing of these kind of books feel a lot more naive than I remember. Probably great for a teen but only just enjoyable for my taste now.

Brilliant!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as well as the rest of the trilogy, and I was surprised that there wasn't too much of a difference from the movie.
As a lover of sci-fi books, and movies, it was nice to read something that was slightly different from the norm. Comparable to Hunger Games, you can easily find the links between the "world" and factions described in the book with reality.
I felt an instant connection with Tris and the pull between that of the introvert vs the dare devil side of her.
Although there is the common theme of "teen in love" running through the story, the rest is real and gritty.
A really great read, and fantastic trilogy!

Not living up to the hype
Maybe it's just not to my taste but even the film was work for me. This is just not as good as the hunger games. I haven't moved on with this series and have no intention of doing so. It didn't grip me and i found the story dragged itself out in the places you wanted less and was too quick in the areas you wanted to know more. Many others think this is an excellent book, but for me, only ok.
