في هذا الكتاب تمَّ جمع أول وآخر ما كتبه هذا العبقري في حياته ففي الجزء الأول والذي جاء تحت عنوان غراميات بائسة نجد أحد عشرة قصّة وقد أطلق على كلّ واحدة منها لقب "مغامرة" فكانت: مغامرة شاعر، مغامرة زوجة، مغامرة جندي، مغامرة قاريء، مغامرة محتال، مغامرة موظف..وغيرها.

وجميعها تصف حالات إنسانية لطائفة من الناس العاديين في لحظة مأزق يتعرضون لها.

أمّا الجزء الثاني فجاء تحت عنوان "كتاب الحواس" الذى بدأ إيتالو حسب رواية أرملته في كتابته عام 1972 حين بدأ يسطر كتابا عن الحواس الخمس، لكنه لم يكمل منه إلا ثلاث قصص وهي: "ملك يتنصت"، "الاسم/ الأنف"، "شمس الفهد".

والكتاب بقسميه، إضافة لكونه متعة أدبية، يمثل مرجعًا مهما لمراحل تطور فكر وأسلوب وتقنيات الكتابة عند كالفينو عبر الزمن وبمختلف المراحل.
