Story
As a young boy growing up in the outskirts of Dublin, Gabriel Byrne sought refuge in a world of imagination among the fields and hills near his home, at the edge of a rapidly encroaching city. Born to working-class parents and the eldest of six children, he harboured a childhood desire to become a priest. When he was 11 years old, Byrne found himself crossing the Irish Sea to join a seminary in England. Four years later, Byrne had been expelled and he quickly returned to his native city. There he took odd jobs as a messenger boy and a factory labourer to get by.

But the more I think about it, the more I understand that the moments where I've made mistakes, misunderstood stuff and messed up are key. That's where all my learning happens and where I laugh the most. Being a twat is universal and my twatishness is no different to yours. Except perhaps, that mine has been horrifyingly public on occasion.

Chapters out of order
- By Natalie Stirling on 12-10-2023
Publisher's Summary
In this unexpected memoir, written in a creative burst of just a few months in 2022, Sam Neill tells the story of how he became one of the world's most celebrated actors, who has worked with everyone from Meryl Streep to Isabel Adjani, from Jeff Goldblum to Sean Connery, from Steven Spielberg to Jane Campion.
By his own account, his career has been a series of unpredictable turns of fortune. Born in 1947 in Northern Ireland, he emigrated to New Zealand at the age of seven. His family settled in Dunedin on the South Island, but young Sam was sent away to boarding school in Christchurch, where he was hopeless at sports and discovered he enjoyed acting.
But how did you become an actor in New Zealand in the 1960 and 1970s where there was no film industry? After university he made documentary films while also appearing in occasional amateur productions of Shakespeare. In 1977 he took the lead in Sleeping Dogs, the first feature made in New Zealand in more than a decade, a project that led to a major role in Gillian Armstrong's celebrated My Brilliant Career.
And after that Sam Neill found his way, sometimes by accident, into his own brilliant career. He has worked around the world, an actor who has moved effortlessly from blockbuster to art house to TV, from Dr Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park movies to The Piano and Peaky Blinders.
Did I Ever Tell You This? is a joy to listen to, a marvellous and often very funny book, the work of a natural storyteller who is a superb observer of other people, and who writes with love and warmth about his family. It is also his account of his life outside film, especially in Central Otago where he established Two Paddocks, his vineyard famous for its pinot noir.
‘Sam Neill is one of my favourite people in the world, and a great entertainer. Did I Ever Tell You This? is full of warm, funny, and sometimes heartbreaking stories. It will make you feel like you have just sat down under a tree to chat with a dear friend.' JIMMY BARNES
‘Just wonderful, so funny and charming and sharp. Sam Neill's lively, lovely book made me laugh out loud.' MERYL STREEP
‘A fabulously entertaining, insanely readable memoir.' STEPHEN FRY
'DID I EVER TELL YOU THIS? is tender, funny and emotional, modest and generous, both unbearably sad and deliciously companionable.' JANE CAMPION

I was honestly so excited to listen to this book but I was very disappointed
I got so sick of the unnecessary swearing, regular references to drug taking and left wing political views

OMG a more boring narration isn’t possible!
I love Sam as an actor and think he is one of the best. However he clearly seems entirely bored with his own book based on is very dull narration. How on earth can someone who is such a great actor sound so mind numbingly bored with his own book. Very sad.

Highlight of the Year
It has been an absolute joy to listen to Sam reading his utterly charming memoir. He has been a person of interest to me ever since I saw him in Evil Angels and Dead Calm. And of course, the unforgettable haunting film The Piano. Now that I know so much more about him as a person, he has become much more interesting & appealing. And how he manages to look more attractive now, in his 70's, I'll never know. Thank you Sam for your beautifully written book. Stay well, & I hope all your favourable reviews might inspire you to perhaps write a Part 2 down the track? Who knows. Thanks Sam!

A bit disappointing
I was looking forward to this audible book as I'm a fan of Sam Neill but I found it a bit overindulgence, name dropping a lot but not particularly interesting anecdotes about stars he worked with.
After it finished I found myself not having enjoyed it as much as I wanted to and knowing little more about him than I already did.
It was like looking forward to a good meal only to be disappointed that I'd had better.
Shame you didnt let us into more of your life Sam
