Publisher's Summary

In this unexpected memoir, written in a creative burst of just a few months in 2022, Sam Neill tells the story of how he became one of the world's most celebrated actors, who has worked with everyone from Meryl Streep to Isabel Adjani, from Jeff Goldblum to Sean Connery, from Steven Spielberg to Jane Campion.

By his own account, his career has been a series of unpredictable turns of fortune. Born in 1947 in Northern Ireland, he emigrated to New Zealand at the age of seven. His family settled in Dunedin on the South Island, but young Sam was sent away to boarding school in Christchurch, where he was hopeless at sports and discovered he enjoyed acting.

But how did you become an actor in New Zealand in the 1960 and 1970s where there was no film industry? After university he made documentary films while also appearing in occasional amateur productions of Shakespeare. In 1977 he took the lead in Sleeping Dogs, the first feature made in New Zealand in more than a decade, a project that led to a major role in Gillian Armstrong's celebrated My Brilliant Career.

And after that Sam Neill found his way, sometimes by accident, into his own brilliant career. He has worked around the world, an actor who has moved effortlessly from blockbuster to art house to TV, from Dr Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park movies to The Piano and Peaky Blinders.

Did I Ever Tell You This? is a joy to listen to, a marvellous and often very funny book, the work of a natural storyteller who is a superb observer of other people, and who writes with love and warmth about his family. It is also his account of his life outside film, especially in Central Otago where he established Two Paddocks, his vineyard famous for its pinot noir.

‘Sam Neill is one of my favourite people in the world, and a great entertainer. Did I Ever Tell You This? is full of warm, funny, and sometimes heartbreaking stories. It will make you feel like you have just sat down under a tree to chat with a dear friend.' JIMMY BARNES

‘Just wonderful, so funny and charming and sharp. Sam Neill's lively, lovely book made me laugh out loud.' MERYL STREEP

‘A fabulously entertaining, insanely readable memoir.' STEPHEN FRY

'DID I EVER TELL YOU THIS? is tender, funny and emotional, modest and generous, both unbearably sad and deliciously companionable.' JANE CAMPION

So many touch points ..

.. and beautifully written and told. I laughed, shed a few tears and thoroughly got lost in Sam’s story.. he is as an eloquent a storyteller as he is actor, inhabitor of interesting characters. Started it Sunday, finished Tuesday.. loved every moment! More? Thanks Sam for letting us have a little more of your special kind of light :)

Brilliant!

A great story filled with plenty of dry humour, vivid memories of his life's magic moments and nostalgia as he talks about movies we all know well.

A superb read. A super human

Knowing Sam via his films and instagram posts and having once cooked him several dinners way back on Hamilton Island in 1987, I was especially thrilled to have all this time, alone with Sam as we travelled from Sydney to London to Paris to Copenhagen! Sam is an impeccable storyteller, a comedic narrator and a true gentleman. I loved the gossiping too and how he isn’t at all afraid to tell it like it was. Good news too on his recovery. Thank you for this gem, Sam.

Brilliant storytelling from an outstanding actor

A fantastic account of a life well loved. Sam is great writer and recount his life with humour and poignancy. As to be expected, he is an excellent narrator and I would happily read part 2. Love!

Classic Sam Neill playing Sam Neill

I have always tried to figure out how Sam Neill has these characters to play that are so similar but yet so different and after listening to this fantastic storyteller with his dulcet tones I think I've got it. Sam Neill has had a fantastic career and he just plays Sam Neill! Interesting career, a little bit too much politics and drugs (but it does have that Hollywood element) and a plethora of good storytelling about other actors he has worked with. Of course we all love Jurassic Park, but I think the role that stands out for me is "Hunt for the Wilderpeople" where he really dug into love, loss and grief. Thank you Sam for sharing your cancer journey with us as well. Deeply personal and moving on that one. Glad to hear you have your glorious head of hair and more importantly your beard back! Good luck for the next 75 years!

Best Audio Book Ever.

Highly recommend this audio book. I would have missed so much if I had simply read it without Sam’s fabulous narration. Thanks Sam for 14 hours of entertainment.
