What next Harry?
I thoroughly enjoyed this story/production, quite a different experience listening to Michael Connellys’ story telling, which kept me intrigued, as always. I love the way he writes, tight and exciting. I sincerely hope there’s a sequel to this book, as I really want to know what is in stall for Harry. Titus Welliver really brought Harry to life, great performance, as was Christine Lakins’ portrayal of Rene Ballard. Thanks Michael Connelly, another great book!

What a terrific novel!!
i don't know how many more Bosch novels we will see. Bosch is getting older, but he is also getting savvier. There are twists and turns, and we almost lose Bosch in this one. I didn't like Renee Ballard at first, but she is growing on me. Connelly is making her more of a cop and less of a hippie. Her relationship with Bosch definitely goes to a deeper level of collaboration this story. Indeed, they practically read each other's mind. The central scenarios in this book are both cold cases, which I like. Bosch refers to the huge file of cold cases as the Library of Lost Souls. They prey on his mind, and if we see more of Bosch in the future, I think it will have to be more cold cases. With a brief Mickey Haller cameo, this latest from Michael Connelly has everything that has made me a fan. I had to sleep last night so I got up at 5 this morning to finish the book. I am glad I did. Five stars for sure.

Great writing by M Connelly. The voices were perfect and credible, loved every moment of this book. If I have one criticism of it, the end seems a little rushed, almost as if they ran out of time. But maybe it is just me wanting some more.

Love the Harry Bosch series especially read by Titus Welliver
Sounds like the character is not going to be with us for too much longer - so disappointing if he succumbs to his illness

Another masterpiece
Another gripping tale with Harry and Renee at the wheel. It really took some effort not to listen to the whole book in one sitting. I found it very comfortable again, listening to the voices of Christine and Titus (for me the one and only Harry Bosch). The book leaves enough room for yet another great story. I can’t wait for the next one.

This can’t be the end of Harry!
Didn’t quite hit the sweet spot for me. I read Desert Star after I’d re-listened to the entire Bosch, McAvoy and Haller book series in order. If Desert Star is the end of Harry and is in fact Harry’s last book, I don’t think this book is a fitting way for him to go! Not sure why! I don’t think it really ended it properly for me. Also, I don’t feel that Renee is Harry’s successor. Maybe Maddie could step up to the plate and be fast-tracked into RHD! I can’t really put my finger on it but I think the Desert Star plot was a bit too contrived and disjointed for me and didn’t really flow or have the excitement/suspense of previous books. This might have been caused by the separate Renee and Harry storylines. I also found some of the other characters in the book a bit too strange and off the wall. Would love to know what the next Bosch chapter will be!! Another Micky Haller instalment in the meantime wouldn’t go amiss Micheal!!!

Problematic for me
I love Connelly's work, having first started reading them 20 years ago. Bosch is a masterfully written character who is brought to life by his complex relationships with people around him as well as the situations he gets into. However, this book was a real disappointment for me on a number of levels. First off is the character of Ballard. I understand Connelly's need to establish another story arc with the ageing Harry nearing the end of his time. I was excited to learn of a new, female detective a few years ago as Connelly has written some excellent women in the past. Ballard though, is just really dull. Her awkwardness, obsession with her work, tragic backstory with her father's death etc, all mirror Harry's but haven't been developed to make her someone to connect with. Even the important storyline of her fight against the departmental misogyny, which I'm sure is a continuing issue in the public services, was handled in a clichéd fashion in the previous Ballard books. In this book, we have her being the stiff supervisor to Harry's rebellious retiree. A bit sad, really. The second problem is that this book is read like a screenplay, albeit by two very talented people. It doesn't work to build any tension as the two narrators read their parts, sounding instead like a read-through rather than a storytelling. Thirdly, having Titus Welliver read it as Bosch might seem like a good idea, but I don't think it is. I loved his performance in the TV series', but with books we are given freedom to imagine our own version of the characters, something I've always done with the previous books. We might tend to now think of Welliver as Bosch, but it feels like the choice has been taken away.
On the whole, a disappointing experience. I hope that things improve as Harry nears the end of his story as I would love to continue to read Connelly.

Another brilliant Bosch/Ballard novel.
I don't know how Connelly does it but the man rarely (if ever) misses. As page turning as the best he's written and Ballard has to be one of the most seamless and world appropriate characters to ever slip into a series. She just nails the attitude and atmosphere needed to inhabit this world and does it with aplomb, she's definitely a welcome addition to carry the Bosch ethos when the man himself can't do it anymore. All told, a brilliant story with excellent performances from the cast. Highly recommended.
