Der heruntergekommene Jean Fournier wird von der Stadtverwaltung als neuer Friedhofswächter eingestellt. Zusammen mit den zwielichtigen Männern Ossip und Welitscho bewacht er das Gelände, auf dem sich auch die Gruft einer alten Fürstin befindet. Nach und nach findet Fournier heraus, dass hier etwas nicht mit rechten Dingen zugeht.
Er fühlt sich von Tag zu Tag schwächer und macht dafür den Trank verantwortlich, den ihm seine Kollegen abends verabreichen. Fournier verfällt auf eine List und bleibt am Abend wach. Kurz darauf sind von draußen unheimliche Geräusche zu hören. Etwas nähert sich der Unterkunft. Als Fournier blinzelt, sieht er dem unfassbaren Grauen direkt ins Gesicht.
