Publisher's Summary

A deadly venom. A looming rebellion. A vicious siege. And the clock is ticking.

For sorcerer Nate Garrett, the stakes have risen. If Asgard falls, he may lose much more than his home - he may lose the thing dearest to him. To stand a fighting chance against Avalon, he must be ready to go to war. But when his best friend and father are poisoned, Nate must race against the clock in a desperate quest to find a cure.

Layla Cassidy is tasked with gaining the aid of the Valkyrie in Valhalla, but once there, she finds herself involved in another rebellion and must pick a side.

Meanwhile, Mordred finds himself on a hunt for Excalibur, a weapon of incredible power that would aid the rebellion in their fight against Arthur and his allies. But to retrieve it, Mordred must face uncomfortable truths about himself.

War looms over the rebellion, and the battle for Asgard is at hand. Time is running out as Avalon's forces threaten total destruction. But Nate can't be in two places at once. Can he find the cure, and can he, Layla, and Mordred save the realms before it’s too late?

Shonen in Novel Form

I've heard some of the complaints about this series and they have some merit. However, it seems that the author has been influenced by anime and/or manga.
And I love it.
It's fun. The battles are well written and I like most of the characters. It gave bridged the gap between Dresden Files.
Not perfect bit great fun

Progressively becoming bleh

Not as great as the first few books. Enjoyed hearing about the characters again however just lacked the twists turns and quality writing of the first 4-5.

Good but not great

So much promise and so many places this book could have gone. There was just not enough character development and the pace was odd. Long periods without action and no plot progression then wham a whole lot of action. Too much of the book felt like filler. Looking forward to the next book getting back to what made this series so great. Plot, suspense, character progression, and action.

Another solid story,

but I didn't care for having 4 different narrators. They should have left it with Simon and Elizabeth.

Lots of action, lots of the same.

I enjoyed this book and series but sometimes an author can make characters so despicable that no matter how you make them die, its anticlimactic. That is an ongoing them in this series. Fortunately there are enough likable characters to keep me reading otherwise I’d given up a few books back.

Elizabeth Knowleden

Please guys, seriously stop letting Ms Knowleden ruin any more books. She doesn’t know how to articulate her sentences, when She lists people who are working together on something it is particularly horrible.

the story is good but similar character voices

whoever it is that voices mordred can only do 3 female voices it's not a huge issue but when there are multiple female characters speaking next to each other you just cant tell the difference

Boring

The guy doing Mordred's voice narration always takes the enjoyment of the story out of it whenever he comes on.

Not as great as previous books.

Whilst Steve is a fantastic writer and I love his work this book felt somewhat lacking in places. it was as if the writer was not ready to push forward with the story but the publishers were insisted he did. Saying that the story do work better towards the end of the book and does still leave you wanting more. The naration while pretty decent is never the same if you change voices in the middle of the series and I miss the grittyness of James Langtons portrayal of Nate.
if you have kept up with the series you will know what I mean once you listen to this book

Or should it be Death revealed?

For me, this has been the best instalment yet in Nate's continuing journey of self discovery. Although I do worry that Remy is beginning to have a hand in the scripting...

This time we have a three-way split, following Nate, Layla and Mordred. Whilst this is fine in and of itself (variety is after all the spice of life), the decision to use a different narrator for each spoils it, particularly with whoever voices the Mordred segments (Shaun Grindell?) - just stick with Simon Mattacks for the male segments and Elizabeth Knowelden for the female or go the whole hog with full cast which I wouldn't think is doable with the huge number of characters involved.

This is getting to be a bit like light in the Discworld though - it doesn't matter how fast the Rebellion travels, the darkness is already there waiting when it gets there...

A rollercoaster ride for the reader

An emotional rollercoaster of a story, with high & lows for all the characters involved. I can’t wait for the rollercoaster to continue in the next book!

Another excellent listen.

Having listened to all the Hellequin books and the Layla Cassidy books I was looking forward to more Nate.
This book didn’t disappoint and I am trying to be patient for the next book in December but please hurry December 😂
