About this listen

The Alliance has been fighting the Syndics for a century—and losing badly. Now its fleet is crippled and stranded in enemy territory. Their only hope is a man who’s emerged from a century-long hibernation to find he has been heroically idealized beyond belief…

Captain John “Black Jack” Geary’s legendary exploits are known to every schoolchild. Revered for his heroic “last stand” in the early days of the war, he was presumed dead. But a century later, Geary miraculously returns from survival hibernation and reluctantly takes command of the Alliance fleet as it faces annihilation by the Syndics.

Appalled by the hero-worship around him, Geary is nevertheless a man who will do his duty. And he knows that bringing the stolen Syndic hypernet key safely home is the Alliance’s one chance to win the war. But to do that, Geary will have to live up to the impossibly heroic “Black Jack” legend…

I really enjoy this series both the story and the reading. Glad I bought it.

The second time listening

The story was pretty good and I'll be continuing with the series. It is predictable though with characters falling into obvious and predictable archetypes leaving little, if any, room for nuance. The voice acting isn't outstanding especially the women but overall is suitable. Frankly, the only standout parts were the naval manoeuvres and the fun working through the strategic reasoning. But those parts are very good and more than make up for the more boring and somewhat trite social scenes. The book sets up and then delivers on its promises and I'm excited to read more.

Formulaic but a load of fun

Captain Geary is admired by some and hated by others, as he leads the Alliance fleet away from an ambush by the Syndic space fleet. Determined to do his best despite internal opposition from Captain Numos and his faction, he institutes training in battle tactics so that the Alliance fleet can defeat the enemy Syndic attacks when they inevitably come. An enjoyable book with a likeable and talented hero.

Leadership by example
