About this listen

A former slave fighting for justice. A reclusive warrior who no longer believes it exists. And a dark magic that will entangle their fates.

Ripped from a forgotten homeland as a child, Tisaanah learned how to survive with nothing but a sharp wit and a touch of magic. But the night she tries to buy her freedom, she barely escapes with her life.

Desperate to save the best friend she left behind, Tisaanah journeys to the Orders, the most powerful organizations of magic Wielders in the world. But to join their ranks, she must complete an apprenticeship with Maxantarius Farlione, a handsome and reclusive fire wielder who despises the Orders.

The Orders's intentions are cryptic, and Tisaanah must prove herself under the threat of looming war. But even more dangerous are her growing feelings for Maxantarius. The bloody past he wants to forget may be the key to her future...or the downfall of them both.

But Tisaanah will stop at nothing to save those she abandoned. Even if it means gambling in the Orders's deadly games. Even if it means sacrificing her heart.

Even if it means wielding death itself.

Contains mature themes.

I heard about this book series on a FB reader group that I follow. I have to admit, the cover art caught my eye first and the blurb about the book got me second. I love a good fantasy book that has unique world building and well-rounded characters that aren't 1D. Not sure if it's because I went in with no expectations that I was pleasantly surprised by this book or whatnot, but I liked it. The narrators are new to me, but they did a pretty decent job, however I did have to listen to it at a faster pace otherwise it feels too slow for me. This is not a negative, just a personal preference. Pros: -Character creation, growth of self and connected relationships -World-building is unique and is steadily developed as the MC's story unfolds -Emotional moments that shape the characters are revealed to enhance the story and not as a means to move the plot forward. -Both the reader and the MC's world-view are shared; the reader learns as the MC learns -the story progression is steady and moves at a good pace. The story isn't ever stagnant due to all of the moving parts that are happening around the MC -romance is present, but it isn't all in your face. This is a slow development that makes the enemies-to-lovers trope believable. In this case, the slow build/burn was a nice touch and came naturally as the FMC and MMC interact. This book is appropriate for all audiences, well mostly, except if you're reading to a young child due to the violence, but I can comfortably say that it's good for 12+ since the violence/sex aspects are not overly graphic. I don't think there are many authors out there who can created a strong lead who didn't annoy me half way through, or crafted a book that I liked enough to leave a review.. probably why I'd be a horrible book-pusher.. but I am looking forward to the next audio release.

Surprisingly good.

Really enjoyed the character development and writing. Some difficult topics are dealt with in a way that feels appropriate to a YA/NA audience. Looking forward to the next one!

Well developed characters

I read this book last year and loved it, so decided to pop on the audiobook for a reread while I work. Really enjoy the story, I love the way these characters slowly bond & the relationship that develops between them was just as engaging as the first time I read this book. The world, magic, and politics are so well developed. The female narrator did a great job with the various accents and voices.

The male narrator is just as tough to listen to as other reviews say - I didn't realise how hard it would be to actually listen to his constant gasping breaths while he read even with the warnings. The hardest part is that the male POV chapters don't start until quite a bit into the story, so you are fully engaged in the audiobook by the time they roll around. The first 5mins of the guy narrator was bad enough I almost stopped entirely to just go back to the physical book, but once you push through the first few chapters of his reading you adjust. Crossing my fingers that the other two books are better in that regard as I'm keen to continue with the audiobook series

Book was enjoyable, interesting plot with nice world building and a slow burn romance. The narration was tricky to listen to, the female voice narrator put on a very young/baby sounding voice for when the FMC talks in an accent and that frustrated me. She’s a very strong character and did not sound like it. I read and listened to this, probably couldn’t have listened to the whole book! Started the second book and it’s going well, new characters are great!

3.5/5! Voice narration lets it down, but enjoyable book!

The female narrator is good, but only for female parts. Her 'male' voice is always a scratchy, grimy sort of feel. For the main male character, to be able to feel some of the romance, it is just not possible. I have been struggling to try to get through this. The story also feels a bit jumpy in the beginning, skipping some context sometimes where I think I've missed something only to find when I rewind it's just not a good Segway into whatever is coming next in the plot. Good story idea, needs a little work, definitely worth reading yourself instead of the audiobook unfortunately.

Difficult Narration

Interesting story and I’d like to listen to the next book, however the narrators are not great to listen to. I found myself losing focus, particularly during the male sections.
