Publisher's Summary

A mage and a warrior must see beyond their facades and embrace the bond that links their souls in this powerful Carpathian novel from number-one New York Times best-selling author Christine Feehan.

At any other time, Julija Brennan would find solace in the quiet of the Sierra Mountains, but now the mage is in the race of her life. Having broken free from her controlling family, Julija's attempt to warn the Carpathians of the coming threat has failed and put a target on her back - and those who are hunting her are close behind....

After centuries locked away in a monastery in the Carpathian Mountains, Isai Florea can't believe he's finally found his lifemate - the missing half of his soul. The second he sees Julija, his world blazes with color. But despite their explosive connection, Julija rebels against what she sees as Isai's intent to control her and rejects the bond that would prevent him from becoming a monster. As their unfulfilled bond continues to call to them both, Julija and Isai aim to complete the task that brought them together.

They are used to facing danger alone, but now the mage and the ancient warrior must learn how to rely on each other in order to stop a plot that threatens all Carpathians..

Another best sellar

I always get the audio before the book and it's because I just love these stories and not to forget the narrator who brilliantly reads the story.. I just loved both characters, one old an ancient show has been there done that and then there the brilliant young lady, strong when she thinks shes weak. A mixture of mage and Carpithain. Mates, both determined to destroy the evil book.
I really wanted to hear more of this story I was so entrenched in it. , B it like most great things they all have to come to an end somewhere.
I would definately reccommend this to others. and listen to again

Dark Illusion

Loved this book! Christine Feehan is amazing. Just wish she could write faster! I can't wait for the next book. I loved these two main characters as much as the others I have met. The main battle in the background is getting really exciting as well.

Same old ... Same old....

I'm hesitant to give my review because I both loved it and struggled with it. Mrs. Feehan's world of dark Carpathians and vampires have grabbed the attention of millions. ... but her last 5 or 6 books have me struggling wanting to continue to read. the story line is getting stale. I mean... she has jumped the shark twice now with her introduction of jaguars and lycans.

what bothers me is that her first dozen books all followed the same Carpathian rules. (can't stay awake during day, conversion, hierarchy...ect...) but now ranks are growing and there are mixtures of species that change the rules of what defines a Carpathian. even more I'm bothered because every single one of the last 7 books have referenced their main characters as the strongest sms most powerful being ever. and then the next book comes out and those characters are even MORE powerful. ugh please give me a break already.

on a positive note....the plots are changing and new enemies are developing. and I guess this weird United States as a base of operations thing? Not sure I understand why? And why do they make Gary seem ancient when he was just recently turned????!!! It's not believable and seriously not convincing.

like most of you... I hate these recent books so much but I keep crawling back for more. Hoping next book is better and doesn't make me hate the female lead!

Darkly Disappointed

Let me first say that I really have enjoyed the dark series and I've read every book in the series. In my opinion, the first books in the series are always the best, but I do like this series. From to the very beginning of thos book I felt as if I was listening to porn....very detailed. I know some listeners are into that...I am not. Sad for me, but I'll say goodbye to the dark series. Wasted money on this one!

Sigh, I wish it was as good as early books

Well, I’ve gotta say that Feehan didn’t give us much plot or action. Plenty of sex, but little to no context to make it truly meaningful. There’s a lot of length for very little action; and 50x saying “we gotta get the book”.
I loved the Dark series and relisten to the whole series periodically. I even wish I could get copies of Juanita Parker’s readings of the early books, as I associate her mispronunciations with them. They’re the best in the series, for plotting, action and characters.
Frangione is a great narrator and Feehan is lucky to have him read this.

NARRATION WAS GOOD!! NOT GREAT!!

Narrator Jim Frangione Can't do female voices. This takes away from the story!

After waiting 13 years!! Since 2006 "Dark Demon" book was released. The High Mage Xavier's book of Dark Magic Spells was introduced into the Dark series storyline. Hurray!!! we finally find out what happens to this evil book of magic spells.

I can't believe I have been waiting 13 years to see how Christine Feehan would write the destruction of the book. The first time readers get a glimpse of the evil book is in Dark Demon. Natayla and Vikirnoff's story. The search and destruction of the book by Julija and Isai was very well written. I like the relationship between Isai and Julija. CF has done what many fans have asked her by writing shorter and less sex scenes. Dark Illusion is no where near erotic like her other Dark series book and that also, is a good thing. The best part of the entire book was when Julija and Isai found Iulian. He is Isai's brother who had stolen the evil book from The Prince. He sacrifices his life to guard the book with his blood. He becomes a Shadow Warrior. I was hoping they could resurrect him somehow.

The reader is introduced to lots of new characters. I think we will see one again. But the book seemed rushed. There was not camaraderie between the Carpathian like in other books. Which leaves it lacking. I felt like it was over edited leaving gaps at the end. The End was abrupt and almost felt like a cliffhanger. I hope the next book is about Elisabeta and her lifemate Farro. She does make a good show in Dark Illusion talking telepathically with Julija. But she is still in the ground. The Dark series storyline moves at a Snails Pace!!

I wish Christine would spend more time on The Dark series. Her best selling and oldest series she writes. One incomplete story Once a Year is Just Not Enough!!

Love Christine Feehan. Disliked the narrator.

I am a huge Christine Feehan fan. I was excited to try my first audible book by her, however I felt the narrator detracted from the story. While he got the authoritative masculine tones correct the feminine tones sounded whining and petulant. Also the word tears from the eyes as in crying was mistaken as tears in something and vice versa on more than one occasion.

Very hot and exciting, wasn’t the best female’s behavior

I’ve read every book Ms Feehan’s written & loved them. This is one of two that I can’t give 5 stars too. Thou the female was technically more powerful than the male, he had to keep giving constant approval and encouragement to her. I realize she had been abused since being very little and seen a lot, but all Carpathian’s deal with harsh realities. The premise behind the story was great, loved the animals and their interaction, her behavior began to disgust me a little thou, but not enough to want to stop. It was a very exciting book, and some very hot sex, loved most of it.

What happened?

I have read every one of Feehans books, but the last couple of books (this series and the shadow series) seem to be the same formula recycled. I am 12 mins into this book and I have to return it. I stuck with this series because I love the over arching storyline of the prince and the disease that effects the carpathian women. But each book the male lead seems to be more and more obnoxious. The story doesn’t feel as believable anymore . The stories seem fast forwarded and the writing seems out of touch. I don’t know anymore. Maybe I just grew out of the books? Either way think it’s time I move on.

Waste of time

Im giving this book a 1 star rating ONLY because on the authors website she said she wrote this book to answer “Many” unanswered questions left over from earlier books. However Only 1 was answered and the book just ended without a decent conclusion, leaving everyone with many more questions.

starts weakly & ends weakly

I kept reading because it was a christene feehan book but she broke rules she established in book 1. she repeated herself about basic things & she had to have the reader say the end to know that it was done

Disappointed

The first part of the series was excellent and I couldn’t wait for the next one to come out. In each book the protagonist has been the most bad ass of the bad asses then in the next book the main male character has been the baddest of the bad… It’s just becoming annoying. I purchased this one out of hope that it would be as good as the first ones. It was not.

difficult with one male pwrformer only

story brilliant as always but one male performer aline cannot get inflection tone or even any approximation of female voice they come out flat which takes away from the story ,I prefer the male female duo of others in the series ,dark curse ,dark peril, dark possession and dark peril ,they are so much smoother

Entertaining

Really good. The narrator is very good but the performance would be even better if there was a female narrator as well.
