About this listen
A missing child's body is found on the edge of the Peak District. As DCI Kenny Murrain and his team investigate, more attempted child abductions are reported. Murrain's instincts tell him this is a community with secrets, and those secrets have their roots deep in the past.
Unexpected connections surface as he uncovers mysteries long buried. A motorcycle accident in the nearby hills. The unexplained death of a local prison governor. And a high-profile child killing two decades before. Then another child goes missing, and Murrain and his team must race to identify the killer before the past catches up with them and it's too late....

"A talent to be reckoned with...A strong story line, muscular prose and a real sense of pace...a police procedural for a new age.” (Daily Mail)

Fast paced and exciting book!

I've seen people criticize the narrator for reading in a monotone, not much character, etc.
That did not bother me - I'd rather have a monotonic narrator than one over the top with accents, or who gets accents wrong, or tries to do male/female voices, and generally messes up.
That type of narration gets in the way too much, and I drop those books, even when have paid for them. (Love the Plus catalogue!)
However - I did find Wagland's pace much too slow (and that's bad production, not bad narration).
And then, about 20 minutes into Book 1, I remembered that the Audible app has a wonderful speed control.
So I changed the speed to 1.2 X normal speed.
Perfect.
You cannot go much beyond that because speed controls are not "intelligent". They will shorten the gaps between sentences too, so above 1.2 it gets just too rapid-paced for comfort.
1.2 times normal speed allowed me to enjoy the book.
I just wish Wagland's elocution teacher had got him out of the unfortunate habit of adding an R sound where it should not be: like "rohr" for "raw". Sigh.
Suggestion: Change app playback speed to 1.2x
