أثناء ذلك دخل عليه "الكولونيل ثودروبنسون" صاحب ومدير أعظم سيرك في العالم والذي كان يستعدُّ هو وطاقمه لحفل افتتاحٍ كبير الليلة لكنَّ حوادثَ غريبة حدثت معهم كانتشار مرضٍ فتّاك بين الفيلة أدى إلى وفاة بعضها، موت الأسد الأشهر لديهم في السيرك، واختفاء بعض الرجال، لكن الحدث الذي استدعى قدومه كان تلقي ألمع نجوم استعراضاته رسائل تهديد جعلتهم يقررون الامتناع عن القيام بأدوارهم في حفل الافتتاح.

في تلك اللحظة أقبل أحد الضباط ليخبر المحقق ومدير السيرك بانَّ حادثًا مريعًا وقع في السيرك وقد هوى فيه أحد اللاعبين من فوق حبلٍ شاهق وفارق الحياة !!
