thought provoking

I am not a professional coach, I am a manager of a team and I wanted to find ways to coach differently to produce different results, thus decided to listen to this book. I also bought the book about half way through because I liked what I was hearing. I have gained a new perspective when conducting my conversations. The narrator was very easy to follow.

Conventional coaching

There are basic ideas like reflecting, focusing outcomes and coaching the person instead of the problem. The main reason this was not for me is because of the reflecting, summarizing and paraphrasing the clients content. I lean more towards clean language and this is too "dirty" for me, because you are changing/distorting the content when you reflect, summarize or paraphrase, alas, this is what many coaches teach/do. It's not that it's completely ineffective, just other options allow the client to work through and resolve issues more in line with my own practice. If you're new, a fan of the author, or are inclined to this type of model, go for it. I'd recommend Caitlin Walker for those tired of the same-o, same-o. Lesser known and highly effective. YMMV

Doing Coaching or Being a Coach

Excellent information and wisdom!

The author clearly laid out her concepts, which can be immediately applied to the coaching space, the professional associates and in personal relationships, as well. The performance was well-paced and the narrator was easy to listen to. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience and will order a hardcopy of this book to add to my reference library.

A must read for all coaches

What a great value-adding book. In addition to the conceptual discussion, it's a gem of How-to guidance supported with lots of case studies and tips that manifest how the concepts look in practice. As a coach, I found this book well worth the time spent listening to it. I highly recommend it.

Exceptional

Especially if you are a new coach, coaching might seem quite confusing. Marcia has simplified and clarified coaching to its constituents parts. An approach to coaching that truly has the potential to change lives once you embody the knowledge condensed in this book. Spend a month on each chapter, embody it and then move on. I would advice you, after the introduction, to begin with the 3 mental habits, and then to move towards the 5 essential practises. Her approach is very similar to Motivational Interviewing and no wonder, as both approaches are created to bring about a behavioural change. Enjoy the journey :)

Best Book

Brilliant book, great if you are new to coaching or experienced. A handbook that I will regularly access as a new Coach. Easy to connect with and the case studies are helpful. I've now downloaded the kindle version!
