تعدُّ رواية أولاد حارتنا من أكثر الروايات إثارة للجدل في الأدب المعاصر فقد اتخذت طابعًا رمزيًا وصفه معظم النقاد بالمتطرف، لأنه طال الذات الإلهية ، كما تعد الرواية من أهم الأعمال التي ساهمت في حصول نجيب محفوظ على جائزة نوبل للآداب عام 1988م حيث تم الإشارة إليها عند منحه الجائزة.

تدور أحداث الرواية في الحارة والتي يكون الجبلاوي هو أصلها وصاحب الشروط العشر فيها.. ولسبب لا نعلمه يفضل أدهم على إدريس فيتمرد إدريس ويطرده الجبلاوي من كرامته، ولكنه يستطيع إغواء أدهم بإثارة شوقه للمعرفة بتحريض من زوجته فيطردهما الجبلاوي باكيين نادمين ، وينجبا قدري الذي يقتل فيما بعد أخاه همام ..فيحتجب الجبلاوي في قصره تاركًا الحارة دون تدخل منه ليتم اضطهاد بني حمدان ( بني على يد ناظر الوقف..وهكذا.

كان من الممكن أن تمر هذه الرواية مرور الكرام لولا التشابه الكبير في أسماء الشخصيات الرئيسية وأسماء الشخصيات الدينية، وتشابه أحداث الرواية مع الأحداث التي صارت منذ أن طرد الله آدم من الجنة وحتى اليوم، إضافةً إلى النهاية التي اختارها محفوظ والتي كانت بمثابة القشة التي قصمت ظهر البعير.
