كتب ستيفان زفايغ إلى صديقه هرمان كيتسن قبل انتحاره بخمسة أسابيع: "ليس هناك شيء مهم أقوله عن نفسي. كتبت قصة قصيرة حسب أنموذجي المفضل البائس، وهي أطول من أن تنشر في صحيفة أو مجلة وأقصر من أن يضمها كتاب وأشد غموضاً من أن يفهمها جمهور القراء العريض وأشد غرابة من موضوعها في حد ذاته".

إن "لاعب الشطرنج" على بساطتها رواية مراوغة ظاهرها حكاية طريفة ممتعة عن سيرة لاعب شطرنج، وباطنها رسالة وداع وجهها الكاتب زفايغ إلى الإنسانية جمعاء بعد أن فقد الأمل في الإنسان كما حلم به ودافع عنه، الإنسان الذي تحول إلى آلة تدمير لا هاجس لها غير السيطرة والربح: رجل الدين، رجل الأمن، المحامي، التاجر، لا أحد نجا من الإدانة، ولا أحد حافظ على هويته في لعبة التحولات. لقد غربت الشمس وآن الأوان لكي نقول وداعاً.
