Critic Reviews

”Not since Graham Greene has a novelist captured so forcefully the relationship between school bully and victim... Atwood's games are played, exquisitely, by little girls” ( Listener)

Too long!

Oh my God. This book just keeps on going! I enjoyed the first part when the main character was a child but then it just seems to continue forever!

Also this audio version seemed to include multiple takes if same sentences.

Great book, great reader

This is Atwood at the height of her powers, beautifully read by xxxx. My only quibble is the lack of post production. On a number of occasions the reader repeats a sentence, making small corrections to her intonation but her first attempt has not been edited out. I think this is a shame given the care the reader has taken to get it right.

Amazing but...

Needs editing. Narrator heard to repeat sentences that should have been edited when put together. This happens a lot towards the end of the book. Otherwise narrative great, loved the story.

My first Atwood novel and definitely not my last

story great, unfinished audiobook

the story is unedited, and the narrator often repeats lines as if in different takes.

Recording needs some editing.

The book is great, but the narrator's carefree tone at times fails to fully draw out the darker themes. This recording also contains multiple outtakes which have been left in the final edit, which can be quite distracting.

Narration needs editing

I love this book, as I do all of Atwood’s work. It’s a little spoilt at times, as there doesn’t seem to have been much editing - lots of repeated lines, with different tone or direction. It’s not a deal breaker by any means, but it takes a little of the shine off.

My new all-time favourite!

I loved this book, it really resonated with me. Accurately described how debilitating childhood bullying can be, how it shapes our older selves. Another side of Margaret Atwood's marvellous storytelling.

Nice story, fail on the edit

The story is very good but whoever was editing the recording fell asleep at the wheel halfway through - there are a lot of repeated phrases, which was a little disruptive

Fabulous but glitchy

Atwood is incredible. The narration was mostly great. Sarcasm was a little over done. Unfortunately the editing was very sloppy, and often phrases were repeated.

Great prose but lacked active plot

The prose is very good & never ending and this book is best read for its prose. But any plot based around Cordelia is only barely existent. Rather it is much more the dreams & experiences of a mostly happy girl, from childhood to womanhood. I like a very active plot, one that glues me to the text. I liked the 3 other books I’ve read from this author much more than this one.
