Er unternimmt darin den Versuch, seinen lebenslangen Vaterkonflikt in allen seinen bedrohlichen und irrationalen Einzelheiten auszubreiten und auf diese Weise zu bewältigen. Kafka schrieb "Brief an den Vater" im November 1919 in der Pension Stüdl in Schelesen. Im Dezember 1919 kehrte er nach Prag zurück, ohne den Brief an seinen Vater abgeschickt oder persönlich übergeben zu haben. Geblieben ist ein bedeutendes Stück Weltliteratur!
