Publisher's Summary

Luc O'Donnell is tangentially - and reluctantly - famous. His rock-star parents split when he was young, and the father he's never met spent the next 20 years cruising in and out of rehab. Now that his dad's making a comeback, Luc's back in the public eye, and one compromising photo is enough to ruin everything.

To clean up his image, Luc has to find a nice normal relationship...and Oliver Blackwood is as nice and normal as they come. He's a barrister, an ethical vegetarian, and someone who has never inspired a moment of scandal in his life. In other words, he’s perfect boyfriend material. Unfortunately, apart from being gay, single, and really really in need of a date for a big event, Luc and Oliver have nothing in common. So they strike a deal to be publicity-friendly (fake) boyfriends until the dust settles. Then they can go their separate ways and pretend it never happened.

But the thing about fake-dating is that it can feel a lot like real-dating. And that's when you get used to someone...start falling for them...don't ever want to let them go.

My new favourite novel!

I loved this story! Was it a bit predictable, sure but the blurb tells you what’s going to happen so you shouldn’t be surprised. What I didn’t expect were the laugh out loud moments, butterflies in my stomach and the emotional journey I went on with Luc.

This was hands down some of the best narration by Joe Jameson. His portrayal of every character was spot on, each had defined voices and I was never confused with who was speaking which has happened with audiobooks.

Everyone please buy this book!

The right material!

Boyfriend Material hit the right note of fun & funny yet serious enough to care.

I’ve been in a reading slump recently. It’s been hard to find a romance with real emotional growth from trying situations that aren’t so tragic that they’re too much to take because 2020 is a dumpster fire. I completely forgot about social distancing while watching Luc deftly schmooze donors for CRAPP. I liked Oliver enthusing about his career & making sure jokes weren’t mean spirited. I cheered when the hotelier refused to give out personal information about a guest. It was great that no one went stalker - they said their piece & took no for an answer. The solid couple of chapters full of parents and (appropriate) F-words were tense and interesting and healthy. I liked the use of internet grammar (such van, much emergency; clean all the things: we baconed in silence) and supportive friends.

I agree with the SBTB review that suggested a longer or additional final scene or epilogue would be in order. Not so much because they were lacking, but because I wanted more time with Oliver and Luc being together & good for each other. Revisiting the hedgehog boxers was a nice touch, but what I like about fake relationships is how they nudge the characters back together again and again until they catch their groove. There was so much good togetherness in the book as a whole, after a couple chapters of apartness (forgive me), I wanted more time with them being together again.

If you want a comedic romance that has light & fluffy moments, a running side gag of escalating book emergencies, good & bad parents, and emotion enough to tug the heartstrings, read Boyfriend Material. (If you haven’t belly laughed by the ~3rd page/chapter, it’s not your kind of humor. It is exactly the kind of humor I enjoy so I LOLed a lot.)

Steam: Low. The M/M sexytimes were slow to get going then off page.

Narration: Generally well done. Narrator used different voices for dialogue. Some of the choices made for female voices seemed a tad odd but overall it was pleasant listening. Good audio quality.

Great read for fans of Red, White and Royal Blue

I always enjoy a good fake boyfriend yarn and these characters were compelling. The author’s breezy tone made it very hard for me to put this down! The narrator is an asset to the prose and a delight to listen to. Highly recommend! ❤️💙❤️💙

Fabulous

My favorite book of this year, and my favorite narration. Both have helped to keep my world afloat in the chaos that is the year 2020.

Wonderful

Alexis Hall is a wonderful writer whose characters are full of life and joy. You can feel the fun he has playing with language and the thoughtfulness put into it.

Joe Jameson did a fabulous performance. He was a full cast of characters himself. I particularly liked his upper class nitwit performance.

I highly recommend this book.

All the heart eyes emojis.

Quirky, emotional, humorous , and sweet.

I loved this very typically quirky and often hilarious romance. All the characters - even the ridiculous over-the-top posh ones were well developed and truly made the book in my opinion. Like almost all of this author’s books it was outstanding! Between the times I found myself chuckling at the humor, I was tearing up because of Lucian’s pain and emotional damage. It was not an easy path to the HFN finale. I hope Hall has more books in the works because he is truly one of the most talented authors I’ve read - especially in this genre and it was a long wait for this latest publication. I’m so happy to find something of his again.

Joe Jameson made this story even better

I absolutely adored this book. Sometimes it takes realizing that needing your partner isn't a bad thing. That even people who you're related to can be harmful and toxic in your life, and it's the people who stand by you and support you who make the most of life. Beautiful love story. I was amazing by Joe Jameson. The many different characters and voices...I have never heard anyone do that so well.

Loved this book!

How this was incredible I feel very lucky to have picked it up out of my recommendations! Both Oliver and Luc felt so real and I loved all the things they tackled for each other and themselves. The friends and friendship were excellent and I loved every second of the banter. I fell in love with these pair of self destructive assholes dearly and had a lovely time doing so! Only wish I got to watch them go on with their lives and continue to have fun.
Thank you for this book and the friends and hopes within this is definitely a new favorite of mine.

Took an age to get going.

I was rather disappointed with this one. I have listened to all of AH's books and this one didn't hit the spot for me I'm afraid to say. Chapters 1 - 20 very slow and in some cases boring, lifted up a little in the middle even some good humour & then got moving. However, towards the end it left me feeling more frustrated especially with the lack of epilogue.
Good narrator, just the story was not my cup of tea this time around.

The most perfect audiobook I've ever heard!

I didn't had high exceptations from this audiobook...but holyhell! I never ever could have dreamed up this kind of perfection. I have really bad experience with british narrators, and especially if the narrator is someone I didn't heard of earlier. But one thing is for sure, after this, I need more from the narrator!
I have just one question. How!? How could someone do something amazing like this. I mean those voices phew, hot as hell! Perfect fit for Oliver&Luc, just the way I imagined them, if not better!

The story in itself is amazing, I can write about it's awesomness for weeks without getting tired of it. (But I won't, so you're safe ;) ) Lucien and Oliver in audiobook is just something else. When you imagine the perfect cake, you see it and it's just as you thought it would be (the ebook/paperback version), then you got a spoon and got to taste the cake... and bammm foodgasm, the flavours explodes on your tongue and you're having an out of body experience (audiobook with eargasm!!!).

Yeah, that was the feeling I had while listening to this book. Eargasm all the way. I laughed, smiled and laughed some more, because let's be clear, those scenes with Alex and the jokes... hilarious.

This book, this audio is the most perfect thing ever. If you're into audiobooks, you NEED this. If you're not, then give it a try, please, because eargasm! But/and if you loved the ebook/paperback, then you definitely NEED the audio in your life. Believe me.

I'll re-listen to it many, many times. Oliver saying Lucien is just...*sigh*. Perfect.

You have to rate it, before you ask for a refund

How can this audiobook have so many good reviews? Both protagonists were unsympathetic and made worse by very boring voices.
I did not finish it.

Lots to love

This book was really good. I didn’t give it 5 stars because the humour with Alex and others felt a little shallow, and the plot towards the end didn’t feel as satisfying as it could have done. I also wanted an epilogue (maybe featuring a birthday?) and I felt a bit shortchanged. Still a great book, though. Just not half as good as Alexis Hall’s other books such as For Real, Glitterland, or How to Bang a Billionaire.

Brilliant narration by JJ....

***This is the 4th time I've submitted this review to Audible. If it was good enough for Amazon UK, why isn't it good enough for Audible??*** Goodreads review dated 12th July 2020.

What a perfect 'vehicle' this story was to showcase Joe Jameson's wonderful vocal talent. The amazing accents, a distinct voice for each character...including the female ones, and he even managed to get some feels in there somewhere too 😉; in fact, several of his narrations are already on my 'Awesome Audio Narration' bookshelf. I seem to remember reading somewhere that Alexis was quite impressed with Joe's narration for Mary Renault's classic The Charioteer...as was I 😊, so I'm thinking maybe that's why Joe was chosen to narrate this one? I also know Joe narrates as Hamish Long and Rusty Coles for several of Harper Fox's stories...in particular Brothers of the Wild North Sea, which was fabulous. 5 stars definitely for the narration.

As far as this no sex on page Fake Boyfriend/Rom-Com story and characters were concerned, it wasn't my fave of Alexis' stories I'm afraid [that honour is still shared by For Real and Glitterland...shading towards For Real 🤗]. Yes, it was bl**dy funny...laugh out loud funny at times, especially the gormless Alex Twaddle and his 'Hooray Henry' show, and Rhys Jones Bowen being the most inept Welsh IT guru you could ever wish to meet. I loved drippy Bridget who got a perfect 'Sloane Ranger' accent, and Luc's mum with her very laidback French drawl was good too. Everyone [well, apart from Luc's boss at CRAPP 😉] was so nice and helpful; it was actually Luc I had trouble with, right from the start. I just didn't fully connect with him [or even like him] until quite late on in the story, although I LOVED Oliver most of the time...until their roles were sadly reversed towards the end of the story, and I was SO annoyed 😡. Alexis and his character observations are, as usual, spot on for the most part. The less said about Luc's worthless *coughs* father and Oliver's horrendously controlling and nasty parents, for whom nothing their grown-up kids ever did was good enough, the better. I was quite surprised [make that gobsmacked] at the HfN ending right at the very end of the story I must say [it was like a football team getting a very late equaliser in a Cup final, to take the match to extra time after the opposition thought they'd already got the match sewn up].

Of course, as we have a mainstream American publisher in this particular instance, we got a few Americanisms thrown into the story too...which obviously do not transfer well over here in the UK e.g. bleachers, felony, alma mater, and dumpsters. Sadly nowadays, we have to accept [and very reluctantly in my particular case, it has to be said 😏] American publishers publishing English/British stories as there are some very untrustworthy publishers out there in LGBTQ + land [see recent press coverage for Dreamspinner Press and Riptide Publishing], and if writing novels is the authors main source of income, why should they have to suffer fraudsters, cheats and fools gladly?? I do not have to tell the M/M community that Alexis is a superb British author.

Witty and very British

Loved everything about this except it ended. Very witty , great humour and insight. The narrator was new to me, wow, he’s such a talent.
