Critic Reviews

"The Boy in the Well is a dark and satisfying mystery. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the company of DI Ben Westphall, a compelling personality.... This one comes thoroughly recommended." (James Oswald)

Great

This is a terrific book if slightly black. I love the protagonist be able to speak to the dead. It’s slightly sad really.
On to the next.

Excellent narration

Unusual story line which made it intriguing. Angus King’s narration was excellent. Not the usual template for a murder mystery. I’m looking forward to the next in series. Highly recommended.

This one is different with an intimate rural locale and an odd collection
of people coming and going. :- )
I was stumped, but had a lot of fun floundering around with the
detectives.

Cerebral and Compelling, Lackluster Ending.

I liked this. Sort of. I mistakenly listened out of sequence b/c I thought I had already listened to Song of the Dead, which is the first in the Westphall series. In both books, the protagonist is VERY MUCH INSIDE HIS OWN HEAD. Like ALL THE TIME. So if that's not your thing, I suggest finding another book. He's also depressed, and somehow this is a super power that allows him to have some kind of special sensory perception about sad people.

*spoilers below*

And dead people. And sad dead people. There are a few actual ghosts that he regularly converses with in a very M. Night Shyamalan kind of way. At times I found myself wondering who was real and who was a ghost.

The "mystery" here is very compelling. Trying to figure out how and why what was done was done kept me listening (or was that Angus King?) But then in the end it was like, "Oh, that." So it was kind of a flat and rather expected resolution in my opinion. I was actually a little pissed off that it had been so interesting and so compelling and then it was like *fzzzzt*.

Since I am hopeliessly in love with narrator Angus King , consider that as you read any review I write on a book he reads. It could be crap and I wouldn't know. I would literally listen to him read the ingredients on every cereal box in the store.

The Lost Boys

I enjoyed this book, kept me engrossed throughout the story. You need to concentrate at times when's DI Westphall goes into his mind or his dark dreams. The characters are brilliant and the twists well you need to listen to it to find out. Great narration again from Angus King. You will not be disappointed by this book.

left me wanting....

wanting to say to the author, "intriguing plot now add in what makes it alive".
Characters need developing. I felt no connection to the main character. To me he was one dimensional, silent tuff ex military guy. Only interesting thing was his ability to talk to dead people. There was no comanartery with his team.
Narration only lacked with the mens voices I found it hard to tell which man was talking.

Ugh

Rambling plot line, hard to get a handle on character who seems at once to be a deceive, and then someone who speaks to the dead.

Just not too sure...

The storyline is good but I feel I keep getting lost in who is a ghost and who isn’t. I didn’t even realize until this book that is what was going on. I thought the DI was a murderer lol

Anyway, I love listening to Angus King but again the story is a bit muddled so Angus’ narration isn’t as clear as I’m used to.

Excellent

Well that was a different type of story, little hint of supernatural there, very enjoyable 👍, I would like to read more, so I will look out for this author again.

Utter Rubbish

This is the worst book I have ever heard. Very confusing and unbelievable. Just utter rubbish.
