Královský písař Jiří Adam z Dobronína spolu se svým pomocníkem Petrem Korcem a služebnou Rozárkou putuje na Moravu. Ačkoli tam byl vyslán z rozkazu nadřízených, těší se, že si po suchopárných povinnostech svého úřadu trochu odpočine u sklenky vína, které tu má lepší chuť než v hlavním městě. Protože nestojí o přílišnou pozornost, rozhodne se vyhnout Brnu a zamíří do Boskovic.
Brzy se však dozvídá o náhlé smrti snoubenky Kryštofa z Boskovic, panny Žofky. Městský purkrabí je přesvědčen, že šlo o vraždu a není sám. Záhy se ukáže, že Žofka nebyla první ženou pána z Boskovic, která zemřela za podivných okolností.
