لم يكن "يوسف إدريس" كاتبًا عاديًا بل كان إنسانًا واسع الإطلاع، غرف من الأدب العالمي كافة ومن الروسي خاصة ولعلَّ ممارسته لمهنة الطب جعلت منه إنسانًا شديد الحساسية وشديد القرب من الناس والتعبير عنهم، حتى لتكاد تقول أنّه يكتب من دواخلهم لا من داخل نفسه.

تجلَّت قدرات إدريس الإبداعية في القصّة القصيرة فكانت مجموعاته ذات صدىً على مرِّ العصور كالمجموعة التي بين يديك الآن والتي تحتوي على ستّ قصص حيث جاءت القصّة الأولى بعنوان: "العتب على النظر" وتحكي تفاصيل حياة حمارٍ ضعفَ بصره فصنع له صاحبه نظارة.

أمّا القصة الثانية: "عين أمه" فتناقش مسألة الطفل الصغير يتيم الأب والذي لفظته أمه بعد أن سكن رحمها طفل رجلٍ آخر فوجد في شجرةٍ نائية حضنًا ومأوى !

القصة الثالثة كانت بعنوان: "الخروج" حيث تستهلك أسرةٌ والدها على مدى خمسةٍ وعشرين عامًا ليجد نفسه بعد ذلك منبوذًا ومكروها.

القصص الأخرى لا تقل إبداعًا عن الأولى وهي: الختان، الرجل والنملة، أبو الرجال.

"العتب على النظر" مجموعة قصصية فريدة من نوعها ستسكن بالك ولن تبرح خيالك لفترةٍ من الزمن.
