Story
When Craig Cooper and Walker Hayes met, Walker was an alcoholic atheist reeling from the backlash of a failed music career. Through their unlikely friendship, Craig’s life demonstrated the love of Christ in a way that shattered Walker’s misconceptions of Christianity, ultimately leading him down the path to a dramatic conversion. The two are now close as brothers, choosing to be next-door neighbors, and ripped out the fence between their homes as a testament to the power of the gospel to break down barriers and unite people together in Christ.
Publisher's Summary
In this inspiring debut memoir, Helen Smallbone, mother of seven creative children―including Christian music artists for KING & COUNTRY and Rebecca St. James―chronicles the family’s journey of faith across the ocean to go where God was leading. Written from a mother’s perspective, Helen shares stories of peaks, valleys, and a family trusting God for provision.
Helen Smallbone’s heartfelt story illustrates what it means to really let God lead, which almost always means living outside the box of how the world says to live. How did an ordinary Australian family produce two Grammy Award-winning artists―Rebecca St. James and for KING & COUNTRY? What happened to bring the Smallbones through closed doors and to new beginnings in the United States? In Behind the Lights, Helen shares not only these stories of her family but of the life lessons they all learned along the way.
In 1991 Helen and her husband, David, packed up their family and sixteen suitcases to move from Australia to the United States. Completely isolated from the support of family and friends, they relied on God to provide them with hope and direction. Helen watched her children join forces as Rebecca St. James’ career grew, soon followed by blossoming careers for the others―as artists, entrepreneurs, filmmakers―and the rise of Joel and Luke’s for KING & COUNTRY on Christian music charts. Helen shares untold stories and insights into how her family worked and stuck together, constantly relying on their faith to guide the way. Helen’s journey includes:
- meeting her future husband with a cockatoo on her shoulder
- the family’s move to the states in blind faith
- the kindness of neighbors and the local church that gave them the encouragement they so desperately needed
- years of touring alongside Rebecca and the formation of for KING & COUNTRY
- the ways God led and enabled her to homeschool and think about education differently
- an inside look at the stories and dynamics of the entire Smallbone family
No matter where you are in life, Helen shows through her own experiences that what God has done in her life, He will do in yours, too.

Honest examples of True Jesus followers
Enjoy the life and times of the remarkable journey story of the Smallbone family to date.
We just heard a fantastic open air concert by For King + Country after God Almighty stopped the cold rain. It was a remarkable concert by Luke & Joel and their gang. After listening to Helen Smallbone read her book, there is no doubt God is foremost in their lives. They included the entire family in everything, regardless, a lesson today's families could create adhesion to each other is so needed. Her Aussie accent and way of speaking is so much fun. I will read the paper copy in time also.

If you’re a mom, you will benefit from reading this!
INo matter what stage you are in, if you are a mom, you need to read (or better yet, listen to) this book. All of us moms have had successes and failures as we journey through raising our children. Helen honestly and humbly shares her stories of BOTH with us. It is a tremendous encouragement that in all of it, God is with us, paving the path for our children. Her wisdom’s in areas of work ethic, schooling, and sibling rivalry is invaluable.
I can honestly say, as a mentor in the ministry Helen co-founded, that she is the REAL DEAL. She truly loves and serves moms, and she is excellent proof that you never really stop being a mom, even when your kids are grown.
Thank you Helen for sharing the story of God’s faithfulness through your life. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A blessing during a difficult time
I sit here at 4:30 in the morning having finished the most incredible book that I have ever read. Right now, I am going through a tough time in my life. Six months ago, God led me to leave my husband so that he could save my husband and our marriage. Then three weeks ago, My husband had a stroke, and at the same time, I found out that he had been having an affair. God's timing is always PERFECT. My sister had gotten me tickets for King and Country for Christmas. Little did I know that those dates would fall when I needed that uplift the most. The day after my husband got into rehabilitation, my sister, my 5-year-old niece, and I were left stage singing our hearts out to for King and Country in Portland, Maine. However, as much as I love to sing and enjoyed their music and message, what truly impacted me the most was the short testimony that Luke gave about their life. So when he offered his mom’s book as a thank you to anyone that sponsored a child, my sister and I helped a child and excepted the gift that they were offering. God spoke through this book to me. It has brought me to tears more than once and caused me to laugh multiple times. However, the thing it has left with me is HOPE. I know that God has a plan, and I will trust that plan for my life. Helen, thank you for being willing to share your story. It has lifted my spirits, and I know that it will lift everyone who sees how God has used your life in such Miraculous ways.
