गोळी म्हणजे केवळ एक गाठोडं असतं, औषधाच्या इवल्याइवल्या कणांचं. तसली बहुतेक गाठोडी जठरात (stomach) सुटतात. काही औषधांना जठरातलं अॅसिड सोसत नाही. म्हणून त्यांची गाठोडी लहान आतड्यात (small intestine) पोचल्यावरच सुटावी अशा बेताने बांधलेली असतात. काही गाठोड्यांतले कप्पे टप्प्याटप्प्याने उघडतात आणि एकामागोमाग एक वेगवेगळी औषधं वेगवेगळ्या वेळी, काही जठरात, काही लहान आतड्यात तर काही मोठ्या आतड्यात अशी मोकळी सोडतात. तशा नेमक्या जागी नेमकं औषध पोचवायच्या पद्धतीला targeted drug delivery म्हणतात.
