About this listen

In October 1962, with the world teetering on the edge of nuclear war, a simple prank aboard the USS Point Defiance spirals into a high-stakes conspiracy. Seaman Earl Kinn, a bored kid from Iowa, sneaks into his authoritarian captain's cabin to move a pen set but accidentally stumbles upon Top Secret documents. Instantly branded a spy and thrown in the brig, his fate rests in the hands of Lieutenant Joe Pluss, a by-the-book JAG officer also from Iowa.

Pluss is ordered to secure a quick confession, but he soon realizes Earl is a scapegoat, not a traitor. His investigation uncovers a sophisticated smuggling ring led by corrupt officers who are exploiting the chaos of the Cuban Missile Crisis to sell advanced military technology. To expose the truth, Pluss must form a secret alliance with the "Earl of Mischief" himself. From his cell, Earl becomes Pluss's eyes and ears, using his talent for troublemaking to gather intelligence.

Together, the unlikely pair must navigate a ship where every shadow holds a threat and an "accident" can be arranged with brutal efficiency. They are forced to bend the rules, risking their careers and lives to outwit a conspiracy protected by the highest levels of command.

The Mischief of the Deep is a tense naval thriller about justice and corruption, where two men must fight a secret war within a war to prevent a devastating betrayal.
