Although every Jew’s mission is to have an impact on the world and to make it a dwelling place for Hashem, there are obviously different levels, and certainly when a new soul comes down into the world, a unique form of service is demanded of it – to bring about something new in the entire world. And this new contribution begins from the very moment the soul enters the world, as it says about Moshe’s birth, “the entire house became filled with light.” (Just that the effect of light is not to create something new, but to reveal what was already there beforehand, whereas the task demanded of a Jew is to bring about something new in the work of Creation.) And since we are speaking about the two great luminaries whose role is to illuminate, it follows that they desire that their students also become “shining lamps” in all matters of spreading the light of Chassidus. This, then is the lesson from the birthday of the two great luminaries – to illuminate the entire world (with the light of Chassidus) which is possible because one operates not with his own power, but with the power of the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe within him.
