「ぼくのおじいちゃんは戦争で兵隊になって南方に行きました。」 家族に戦争体験を聞きまとめる宿題を夏休みに課された、1983年生まれ、小学６年生の千本慶輔は祖父の経験を提出した。慶輔が大学４年の時にその祖父も亡くなり、家族の間であの作文のことが話題に上がる。曰く、祖父は終生大事にしていて、祖父から直接聞いた記憶のない家族は「よくぞ書き残してくれた」と感極まっているのだが、書いた本人には落ち着かない背景があった。
一方、慶輔の同級生、夏目苑子は祖母の体験をまとめ、平和への祈念で締めた作文は先生やクラスから高く評価されたのだが、慶輔に「ウソなろうが」と糾弾される。
