Wie andere "Linkshegelianer" entwickelte sich auch der schlesische Bürgersohn Lassalle unter dem Eindruck der Revolution von 1848, an der er begeistert teilnahm, vom radikalen Republikaner zum Sozialisten. Lassalle verstand sich nicht nur als Anhänger von Marx und Engels, er entwickelte in den 1850er und 60er-Jahren auch eigene Theorieansätze.
