About this listen

Bagpuss, dear Bagpuss, old fat furry cat-puss, wake up, wake up and look at this thing that I bring...

Bagpuss, created by Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin, is no ordinary cat. He is the most famous old cloth cat in the world and lives in a magical shop owned by Emily. When Emily finds something lost or broken, she brings it to Bagpuss, and he, along with his friends, wakes up to bring the object's story to life. Professor Yaffle, the wise woodpecker, Madeleine the rag doll, Gabriel the banjo-playing toad, and the fun-loving mice all work together to restore the item and discover its hidden adventure. It's a place where music, stories, and a little imagination can make anything possible!

Emily brings in a single ballet shoe. Bagpuss and his friends are ready to explore the graceful world of ballet! Professor Yaffle shares the history of ballet dancers, while Madeleine and Gabriel create beautiful songs about a young ballerina's dream. The mice, as always, add their cheeky humor, imagining all sorts of funny dancing scenes.

Critic Reviews

What struck me was the atmosphere of the programmes, their charm and sense of warmth. Then there was Postgate's delivery: heart-warming, mysterious, a great storytelling voice. I grew up in the world he created; it was a nice place to grow up.
-- Nick Park - Creator Of Wallace & Gromit

Oliver Postgate was, for my money, the greatest children's storyteller of the last 100 years.
-- Charlie Brooker - Journalist and Broadcaster

He (Oliver Postgate) was one of the great storytellers on television.
-- Michael Rosen - Author of We're all going on a bear hunt
