About this listen

"Animal Farm" by George Orwell: A Tale of Revolution, Power, and Betrayal

"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."

On a quiet farm, the animals rise up against their human masters, dreaming of a world where all are equal. Inspired by the ideals of freedom and justice, they overthrow their oppressive rulers. However, what begins as a hopeful revolution quickly spirals into a grim tale of power, corruption, and betrayal. George Orwell’s Animal Farm is a masterful allegory that explores the complexities of revolution and the inevitable corruption that follows.

The novel is much more than a simple fable about farm animals; it’s a sharp political commentary on the Russian Revolution and the subsequent rise of Stalinism in the Soviet Union. Orwell, who had witnessed the dangerous tendencies of totalitarianism, uses the farm’s inhabitants as a mirror to reflect the manipulation and betrayal that occurs in all revolutions. As the pigs, led by Napoleon, assume control, the animals begin to realize that their dream of equality has been twisted. "Napoleon is always right." This chilling slogan is drilled into their minds, embodying the way those in power demand unquestioning loyalty, turning a once hopeful cause into a tyranny of its own.

As Napoleon and the pigs grow more powerful, they adopt the oppressive behaviors of their former human masters. Their manipulation of language, the rewriting of history, and the gradual erosion of the original principles of Animalism reflect the ways in which totalitarian regimes exploit their people. Orwell shows how easily the promises of revolution can be co-opted by those who seek power for its own sake. "The only good human being is a dead one." This violent declaration marks the radical shift in the animals’ mindset as they embrace the bloodshed and hatred of their former human oppressors.
