Publisher's Summary

When the smartphone was introduced, many of us quickly adopted it into our lives - too quickly to stop and think about the future costs we were unboxing along with the device. Now blessed with this revolutionary piece of handheld technology, we try to wield it with wisdom, fending off anxieties about how our digital habits impact our spiritual health.

Drawing on the insights of numerous thinkers, published studies, and his own research, writer Tony Reinke identifies 12 potent ways our smartphones have changed our lives - for good and ill. Reinke calls us to cultivate healthy habits for smartphone use in the digital age, encouraging us to be grateful for technological advance, develop skills aimed at maximizing the blessing that we (and others) can receive through our phones, and grow in the wisdom we need to avoid the many pitfalls that exist with such a powerful tool.

Excellent

Great to think through technology from a Christian worldview. Very helpful. I really appreciate Tony Reinke and all of the staff at Desiring God for their deep thinking and clarity on so many different areas of life, to the glory of God.

Practical and challenging!

My 21 year old son recommended this book and said he'd like everyone he knows to read it. Now I understand why.

Every Christian needs to read

Definitely 5 stars, I have been listening ( audible version) of this book and the Lord is working in my heart. I didn't even think I had an issue with my smartphone, but I think this book showed me ways I hadn't even considered. Don't let the years of "nothing" become your whole life, I need a break from my phone.

This Book Will Change You

If you've never scrutinized your use of technology before, get ready. "12 Ways" will make you re-think the role that your phone has been playing in your life. There's a good chance it's ugly, especially if you take Tony's words to heart, but don't be dismayed, because there is an even greater chance to use technology as a way to glorify God and live in awe of the created world. And Tony tells you how.

wish I could share it with everyone

as part of the millennial generation I'm plagued by having everyone my age be submerged in phones. although that's not how I grew up in tried to conform to it. this book gave me comfort in ignoring the trend and going with God instead of the approval of masses :)

Christian Perspective on Technology

As a tech leader I am always interested in perspective on technology from the average technology consumer. I found this book was frustrating but worthwhile.

It was frustrating because the author would not stop talking about Jesus. I wanted more discussion about technology but all this dude can talk about is God. But, that's the point. The author tends more towards Huxley's Brave New World than Orwell's 1984. And as such makes the case that technology should serve creation.

I was glad I took a break from the stuff I was consuming and dwelled on the larger picture for a time with Me Reinke.

Important contribution to the topic!

Well researched. Excellent contribution to the topic. Really appreciated the slant toward prudence rather than demonizing smart phones all together.

Challenging and provocative read

This audiobook was very well read by the narrator, and there were a lot of very thought-provoking points throughout the book.

However, there was also a lot of very unnecessary sanctimony on the author’s part. This was exemplified in an early chapter when the author tried to suggest social media and the connectedness of the internet coupled with people’s selfish desires are the reason for the growing “done movement” (Christians who no longer attend some kind of weekly meeting). Huh?

Sometimes I had no idea what the author’s point was or how he reached some of his conclusions. Other than those kinds of things, of which it seemed like each chapter had at least once, this is a very important book for believers to read or listen to, IMO.

Perhaps the author should have chosen a different title than to emphasize just the “phone” because overall, this book was more about how the internet, in general, is changing us and not just smartphones since many of his opinions related to the internet and social media as a whole.

This is worth a read. Just chew the meat and spit out the cud as you digest it.

Required reading for all Christians!

I loved this book!! More enlightening than convicting in discerning our own online habits & hearts. Every Christian should read this book. Technology changes all of us, but it doesn't have to be for the worse. As long as we alert ourselves to it's snags, we can learn to control it, not the other way around.

Excellent book with insightful questions for personal reflections

The book was written brilliantly and explored the topics well. The author has clearly understood that the primary issue with our smartphone habits relates to our hearts.

Cristian brainwashing book

The writer is a priest that only talks about how sinful is to use mobiles and how we are disappoining god.
Maybe it has some interesting cientific points, but thats only the 2% of the book. The rest looks like a sect manual.
I really dont mind if sb that lives for their religion wants to write a cientific book from a cristian view. But, if you do so, it is very disrespectful to not name it anywere before selling it, because that is scamming. I paid for a book I wasnt selled.
Total rip-off for an indoctrination book I didnt choose for.
