 クリスマスの二日後の朝、ワトスンがシャーロック・ホームズの家を訪ねると、ホームズはひどく使い古された帽子を調べていた。
事情を聞けば、傷痍軍人組合員（コミッショネア）のピータースンがクリスマスの朝に、一羽のガチョウと共に持ってきたものだという。
ガチョウは傷んでしまうのでピータースンが持ち帰ったが、帽子の方は些細なことにも興味を持つホームズの元に預けられたのだった。
そして帽子を観察し、推理をしていたところへ再びピータースンが息も絶えだえにやってきた。
ピータースンの妻がガチョウを調理していた時に餌袋から何かを見つけたという。
