　2025年、国民の５人に1人が後期高齢者になる。この国の年金制度はどうあるべきなのか。その解は、年金官僚たちの壮絶な攻防のドラマの中にちりばめられている。

　私は「年金ブーム」の１年半ほど、ほぼ毎号、『週刊ポスト』の年金取材に明け暮れた。徹夜もしょっちゅうだったが、20代後半という若さ、知識を吸収する喜びがあり、記者としての手ごたえを感じた時期だ。私の記者人生の〝青春〟であった。
　ただし、いくらメディアが激しく批判をしたところで、法律が大きく修正されることはなく、順調に成立した。社会保険庁は解体に追い込まれたが、それで国民生活が良くなったのか、今もって実感がない。
　恥を忍んで言えば、「マクロ経済スライド」が人口減少、平均余命の延びによる調整に過ぎないことを、私は本書の取材で初めて理解した。制度の本筋とずれた所を、懸命に掘り下げていたのである。年金取材にどっぷり浸かった私ですらそうだから、一般国民が知るよしもないだろう。
　2005年に『週刊文春』に移籍してからも、編集部は私に、年金の記事を数多く担当させてくれた。年金は、私にとって〝背骨〟のような取材対象であり続けた。
　本来、私は記者として何を報じるべきだったのか。こうまでメディアを、私を、惹きつける年金とは一体何なのか──。それを解き明かし、ノンフィクション作品として世に問いたいと決意したのが、本書執筆の動機である。
