Er gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Dichter der Spätmittelalters: Francois Villon (1431 - nach 1463). Stéphane Mallarmé (1842-1898), geboren in Paris, war einer der Wegbereiter der modernen Lyrik. Walther von der Vogelweide (um 1170 - 1230) gilt als der bedeutendste deutschsprachige Lyriker des Mittelalters, der in mittelhochdeutscher Sprache dichtete. Er steht wie kein zweiter für den Minnesang. Er ist der deutsche Dichterkönig schlechthin: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 - 1832). Mit seiner Gedichtsammlung Die Blumen des Bösen schuf er den Grundstein für die moderne europäische Lyrik: Charles Baudelaire (1821 - 1867). Diese Sammlung ist keineswegs eine reine Anthologie von Gedichten, sondern ein durchkomponiertes Ganzes, das in sechs Kapiteln angeordnet ist. Romantik, Melancholie und Weltschmerz sind die beherrschenden Stimmungen dieses großen Werkes, das so viele spätere Poeten so nachhaltig beeinflussen sollte.
